More Rant
Thought: Does the Daily Mail indulge in April Fools pranks? Maybe I've been took. Here's another article, this one actually released on the 1st of April:

Still, I've seen no retraction, no gleeful "April Fool's!"
So I'm going to rant on.
A lot of people, wiser than I, have stated that, if we don't learn from history, we wind up repeating it. A question:
How can we learn FROM it, if we don't even LEARN it in the first place?
Maybe Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Defender of the Faith, should ring in on this. Of course, that title originally referred to the Catholic faith, but became attached to the Church of England very soon after its inception. Since when do Muslims and Christian fundamentalists decide what is taught in British Schools? As far as I know, Muslims never have. Christian fundamentalists...well...there was that time when the Puritans took over. Fortunately, it didn't last. Hopefully, this won't either.
Here's the thing. When choosing a country in which to live and raise your children, why would you select one that had a history your religion didn't approve of? I'm not saying you must embrace with fervour everything about your adopted culture, but you must be willing to accept certain things, and education is one of those. What is next? Will we start teaching kids Arabic before they learn English? We wouldn't want to offend the Mosques, now, would we? Maybe we should submit our lesson plans to the Imams for approval in other subjects, as well. Should we make our girls cover their hair, lest the sight of British beauty offend?
O, the possibilities are endless.

I am very sorry to see these words coming off my keyboard, but, if Muslims are offended by the history of the country to which they have immigrated, or their parents have immigrated, then let them go back to the Middle East, and be damned to them! Why should proud England deny her history to appease (yes, APPEASE, and we saw during WWII how well that worked, didn't we?) people whose religion teaches them LIES. God damn it! Those are Their lies, not Ours.
One of the most outstanding and endearing characteristics of the English is stubborn courage in the face of impossible odds. Death before dishonour. Honi soit qui mal y pense.

Working With Latinas
When I started in the clean room laundry, I had no idea that I would shortly be the only person in there who spoke fluent English. My co-workers had names like Francesca, Aide, Epifania, Mariela and, poignantly, America.
One lady, Marta, was more or less bilingual. We traded lessons. She would translate for me and I would answer any and all questions she had about English words and grammar. She taught me a lot of Spanish, but I have to admit that I never really got out of the present tense.
We used to go to the Spanish dances at La Estrella, out near Florence, and I was not allowed to speak English there at all. I learned to order beer, run off drunks, and politely accept an offer to dance or decline a ride home.
Work started at 6:00 AM. We had two 12 1/2 minute breaks, and half an hour for lunch. We were supposed to get off at 3:00 PM, but, if there was extra work, we had to stay. We never knew if we would get holidays off or not, until it came right down to the wire. If we could get two days work done in one, we were given the holiday off. In order to be paid for a holiday, we had to be present for all scheduled shifts for seven days before and seven days after the holiday. The work was gruelling in the extreme. And the job paid 40 cents an hour over minimum wage.
Many of these women went home at 3, or whenever we were allowed to, and stepped right in to single parenting chores, as their husbands went off to their second shift jobs. Once their children were in school, one parent or the other usually worked two jobs. When there were children old enough and responsible enough to watch the little ones, each parent worked two jobs. Sometimes an extra part-time job on the weekends.
One lady had cancer. She was going through chemo and planning and organizing her daughter's Quinceniera at the same time. Another ran a beauty salon out of her home. She was licensed in Mexico, but had to learn English so she could upgrade her license to work here. She could perform miracles with perm solution and scissors. Several had sisters with pre-schoolers who stayed home and kept the little ones for those whose husbands had to work during the day. My son, at three, spoke fluent Spanish, because his babysitter taught him.
Their kids and mine went to the same schools, and they were there for every PTA program, award ceremony and field day. They bought books for their children at the book fairs, and the kids taught their parents to speak English.
For every story you have about druggies, gang members, prostitutes and murderers, I can find you ten about people who never make the news, people who work their butts off all their lives so that their children have a chance at the same opportunities you and I have.
So, if you want to gripe about immigrants, don't come to me.

If there are any of you asking why I'm going after these detention centers, think about this:
Right now, it's illegal immigrants. The same people who have been cutting our grass, working in our factories, cleaning our schools, fixing our cars, watching our children, etc., etc., for years and years. Until the Patriot Act, Homeland Security, or whatever you want to call it.
Now, all of a sudden, these folks are persona non grata. We are being told that it is costing billions of tax dollars to care for and educate them. We are not being told about the money they pay into Social Security and never claim. We are being told about those among them who break our laws, but not about those who work two and three jobs, living low-key lives and doing their best to make the same kind of life for their children as we are. In short, we are being led like sheep to the point where we think it's OK to put them all in detention camps.
$385 million dollars worth of detention camps. Charging hundreds of dollars per day of our tax money to support each one of them there. All this money going into the pockets of KBR, the builder, and CCA, the manager of these institutions. If you don't care about innocent children…you will care about money. At $7000 per month per child that CCA gets of our money…they are violating basic rights of innocent children. CCA gets $2,801,000 per month. There are 400 children and their moms imprisoned at the T. Don Hutto Detention Center. Which one of us gets that kind of money spent on us and our kids?
I know a smattering of history. Not a lot, I grant you, but enough to know that some of the questions I've always had about how Nazism could take root in Germany in the 1930s are being answered before my very eyes.

From prison guards, county commissioners, private prison owners and operators, federal agents all the way to the administration…as we speak…we hold them responsible. We the people are the majority. The dark side is the minority. If they do not comply, if they do not “cease and desist” to commit these illegal acts, if they do not sever themselves from this criminal activity…we the people, the majority of this 21st century American democracy, will seek indictments against anyone and everyone of those who continue to be complicate with these crimes. We would rather have the accomplices of concentration camps prosecuted…than allow them to continue to abuse these innocent children. "Does anyone remember watching the Berlin wall get torn down? Who tore it down? The Russian government? Hell no!!! It was the people! People from both sides of the wall. They were joined by people from all over the world who flew in to share in the elimination of such a demented device. The whole world rejoiced at the demise of cruel human rulership. When Hutto’s doors are opened and the children and their mothers are set free…the world will once again have cause for international rejoicing. They will rejoice with us! And…they will rejoice because the spirit of America’s freedoms will once again be the banner and the envy of the world.

"All that the White House, Chertoff and ICE have done since the first walk and the first vigil is justify, defend, lie, wilfully misinform and cover up…along with bringing in some plastic plants, remove the razor wire, expand the education and give the kids teddy-bears that they previously denied the children. The media still cannot interview the children or their mothers. So much for freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
"To this day…the only ones freed have been by means of big money and legal maneuvering. That is not what we the people want. We want the children and their parents freed! NOW! Not months or years from now. We don’t want a bunch of drawn out political game playing. Every day that a child is locked up…is a day of suffering. A day of callous cruel and inhumane criminality being committed with impunity.
"From the very beginning…we have been demanding freedom for the children, reuniting of families and the cessation of concentration camps.
