Ramona plays the country station at work, and it carries ads for the Covert Chevrolet dealership. In the ads, Covert has been telling people it is located in Taylor, "Just 20 miles east of Round rock on Hwy 79."
That's all very well and good, but every road sign I can remember says that Taylor is 15 miles east of Round Rock, so I was wondering if Taylor had pulled up stakes and replanted a few miles east of its traditional location.
I decided to drive out there and see.
With Taylor, it's really hard to tell. The town is there, but downtown is so full of empty storefronts that it did cross my mind that maybe the town took off and left the buildings. I'm sure there are strip malls somewhere, and new houses, but I wanted to go home. Taylor is depressing.
As I past Covert (about halfway between Taylor and Hutto), I set the "trip meter" in my car. I am here to tell you that it is exactly 10.3 miles from Covert Chevrolet to IH 35.
This begs the question: why are they almost doubling the distance in their ads?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
