School's In!

I wish the drivers in my neighbourhood would figure out the school zones. I really don't know why it's so difficult. There is a flashing light with a sign that says "Speed Limit 20 MPH When Flashing." Now, I will admit, that, with my ongoing interest in crimes against women and children, I have pondered several meanings for that phrase...but still. It really does mean that, WHEN the LIGHT is FLASHING, one is expected to proceed at no more than 20 miles an hour. Indeed, a little farther down the street there is another sign that says, "Speed Limit 20 MPH," and under it, a smaller sign giving the hours the speed limit is in effect. "7:45-9:30 AM and 3:30-4:45 PM."

It does not mean that one has to drive 20 miles an hour ALL DAY. They tried that, years ago, and it didn't really work. Nobody could understand why they had to crawl by the school at 20 MPH when all the kids were safely in class. Except for the other kind of "flashers." They seemed to like it.

I pass by the high school at about 10:15 AM, 1:10 PM, 1:45 PM and 6:15 PM. Every day for the past week, at least one of those journeys has been at 20 MPH, behind somebody who lacks the ability to read a sign.

I suppose that, by May, they will have figured it out.

  1. Consider yourself lucky, on Olhen Rd they drive 40 in the school zone. I'm awfully glad Aidan dosen't have to cross it anymore.
