Birds On a Wire

I've been trying to get a picture of this phenomenon for a long time. Usually, when I see it, I'm driving and there is no place to pull off. This wire was on the edge of a parking lot, so I finally got a shot.

I love the way they do this. They are always one wing length apart. Pigeons and grackles both do it.

One day, I was on my way home from work, and thought I had wandered into an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Crossing west over IH 35 at 620, all the wires at the BP gas station, and at the McDonald's, and the ones crossing the street were absolutely laden with birds. The trees by the McDonald's were moving, and there was no wind, just the constant screaming of the thousands of birds.

But, of course, I was in the inside lane, traffic was thick, and I couldn't stop.

This will have to do, for now.

  1. I do not recall saying this but my girls have told me that when they were younger and we would stop at a traffic light with a scene similar to this one, I would say, "Look, the birds are having a big party".

Wow, that was a run on sentence but I'm way too tired to condense it.

    Great picture, by the way.
