Republican Style

A friend recently sent me this article on the fashions displayed at the convention.

Oscar de la Renta seems to be the designer of choice for Cindy McCain and Laura Bush, and one of Cindy's ensembles is estimated to have cost over $300K. Yes, folks, that's $300,000.00. I'm still having trouble absorbing that.

Remember, the woman is worth $100,000,000, or so I've read elsewhere. As long as the taxpayers don't have to foot the bill, it probably doesn't matter what she wears. It is nice to know how well she keeps in touch with us hoi polloi, though.

Here's what I'd like to see.

Until the election in November, I challenge Cindy McCain, Sarah Palin, Michelle Obama, and What's-his-name's wife to dress as working class American women do--in stuff from Walmart, Target, Kohl's, K-mart, with occasional forays into Penney's for something dressy.

Go ahead, ladies...take a gander at how the other half lives.

If you can dress well from those sources, you deserve to be running the Washington social set.

As a footnote, I don't much like the shiny, structured, stiff, uncomfortable-looking clothing sported by almost all the women at the Republican Convention. Those jackets look more like armour than clothing. Restrictive, too.

  1. What a bloody waste of money! All those starving babies in the world and these biatches think this is okay...? Cloth is cloth, nothing more, nothing less.

The outfits will probably never be worn again. Simply appalling!

  2. Considering they could have got something like at any upscale department store and spent so much less...

I'm getting tired of shiny jackets.

  3. Ah, but this is the way of the rich and famous. Republican, Democrat, Independant or Queen:). I'm not saying I agree with it, I like a good deal myself. but alas, even those greenies like Sheryl Crow wear faded ripped jeans that cost $500 a pop. What a waste....

  6. Oh, don't get me started on our Queen. The banquets and State dinners are just way over the top.

The extra staff that are taken on to kowtow to these overated buffoons, are paid peanuts. Urgh!

  7. The Queen, like Cindy McCain, has her own money. And England does not have the huge tax breaks for the very rich that we have. I realize that the Queen has not always paid taxes, but she has for some years now.

  8. Plus, Mgt, I'm not talking about dinners, which are some of the Queen's and, indeed, the First Lady's duties, but about what the wives of candidates choose to wear for electioneering.

Banquets for foreign dignitaries do come out of state funds, and are part of the job.

What's not part of the job is wearing Oscar de la Renta clothes to the tune of thousands.
