Letter to Jim

Hey, Jim!

Remember that student of yours at Cedar Valley that was so good at mime? The one who went to Round Rock High School, and Johanna had you come in and coach him, and he went all the way to Nationals? That one? Remember how he told you the judge was so impressed? The judge who had worked with Marcel Marceau?

Well, THAT JUDGE, Michael Lee, Artistic Director of OPUS Mime, held a workshop at Round Rock High School this past weekend. Guess who attended? Yup. Your favourite Senior and mine, Brendan Toungate.

We thought the workshop was just Saturday, but some of the kids went back on Sunday, because Michael had figured on two days. There were only about a dozen kids able to be there for the Sunday session, including Brendan.

Tonight, in the Black Box at the PAC, Michael Lee gave a terrific performance, and incorporated the twelve from Sunday into it.

Yes, Jim...I had the privilege of seeing Brendan, and eleven of his closest friends on stage with Michael Lee. As an added bonus, two of the pieces he performed used the music of Scott Joplin.

As a total surprise and an absolute joy, Johanna Whitmore sang the Lutheran Offertory a capella.

Now you know and I know that you would have loved this. You would have hung around to meet Michael.

But you missed it.

Because you put a bullet in your damn head.

Fuck you!

  2. He likes it. Much to my surprise. The workshop is ongoing, until tomorrow. I'm very impressed. Michael moved Brendan to the front row for the group piece, which was called "Chat Room."

We did not know until Sunday night that the kids were going to be in the show.

He goes to Thespian Convention on Thursday.

  5. Ronni, I hope your FU to Jim felt as good writing it as it did for me reading it.

To me, it was such a healthy let go and when I read it, I laughed out loud and said to myself--"you go girl!"

I know it still doesn't take the pain of loss away, but it is an important part of the grieving process.

You are in my thoughts and prayers daily, what a beautiful soul you have that shines through in all your blog writings.

  6. If that's how you feel Ronni and what you want to say Ronni. go with it.

As I have told you before, my Nana took her life, and I watched my Grandfather and mother struggle with why, and what should they have done different.

My Grandfather stopped living the day she chose to take her life.

He went down into a dark well and stayed there, mentally I mean.

Glad to see you getting out and going to your shows and trying as best you can to get on.

And I am glad to see you expressing yourself.

You teach me something everyday Ronni.

I bet you didn't know that, my special mate. X

  10. Wow, Ronnie, I was exposed to Marcel Marceau early in my life thanks to Retta Kelley's family, the Bakers. I have seen him 6 or times. I took my children in NYC and also to the offshoot show inspired by him called Mummenshantz. Took a hole birthday party of girls to see that on Bway.
Honey, your anger and frustration are totally normal. Shoot, I would give him a good ole beech-slap muhself. Congratulations to Brendan. I wish him gigantic success in his pursuit of the arts. I always told my daughters, " No real jobs" and none of them have had one. You are a remarkable mom!
