A Day With Aidan

Of course, I forgot my camera.

I was babysitting Aidan today, because Austin schools are out for Veterans' Day.

It has been a while since I've hung out with him, and I realized that this was an opportunity to have some quality Grandma Time.

We started out at IHOP for pancakes and a milkshake, and moved on to Target for a new pair of tennies. Of course, he fell in love with a couple of other things, like a two piece suit with a shirt and tie...what he wants with that, I don't know, but I made sure we got one on the large side.

Weddings, funerals and Bar Mitzvahs. He's a bit young for that rule, but, on the other hand, his father, his grandmother on his father's side, and now Jim have all deserted him by dying. Maybe it's his way of coping. If so, it's pretty slick, for a nine-year-old. He has always liked dressing up...Chandra got him a tiny tailcoat at a thrift shop some years ago, and he has been unhappy that he outgrew it.

From there, we went to Zilker Park, and joined hundreds of out-of-school Austin kids, and several bus loads of Round Rock kids on field trips. Then he wanted to go to the Botanical Gardens. Now I ask you, what kid wants to go to the Botanical Gardens? We had fun, 'sploring all the little paths through the Oriental Garden, and strolling through the Rose Garden and the Dinosaur Garden.

While driving home, we decided (he decided) that Toy Joy would be a lovely place to get a prezzie for Mommy, so we stopped there. We actually did buy Chandra a G W Bush punching bag, and got Aidan a Chinese Finger Trap. I was ready for him to have a Chinese Finger Trap, by then.

I had fun. I hope he did.

Next time: The Alamo!

  2. Oh my! The dressing up sounds exactly like my grandson. He has a blue shirt with matching tie and a black shirt with matching tie.

He thinks he is a gangster of something. My black suit jacket gets hauled out of the wardrobe on a regular basis...no matter that it bashes hell out of his knees. LOL

You are a good Grandma, Ronni.

  3. Aidan has been going through an awkward age, but now, at 9, he's a good companion. I'm fairly patient with questions, but when he starts to ask me about internal combustion engines, I have to tell him to ask his Uncle Hector.

  4. Same age as my grandson.

We were driving back from the store on Thursday evening and he asked me "Nana, what do you call a man with no ears?" I said "I don't know, darling". He said "Anything you like, he can't hear you".

Those are the moments I love.

Just what the Doctor ordered a day of love and laughter.

You sound like a cool Granny Ronni.
