A Day Out

Brendan and I went out for breakfast today, to Wards' Cafe. Wards' Cafe was a fixture in Round Rock for years, situated in the back of a building that had a bar in the front. At some point in the 80s, the Wards sold the cafe to someone else, and the name changed to Mom's Cafe. It was cleaned up, and the food was just as good. When "Mom" moved on, the Wards took it over again, and it has got much better than it ever was. Right after the Wards took over, the quality was a bit shaky for a while, but they are back on track now. They serve good country fare at reasonable prices and have great coffee. It's a happening place at around 7:30 in the morning, too.

This afternoon, Chandra and I went to see a Duerer exhibit at the Blanton Art Gallery on the UT campus. It was "Museum Day" in Austin, where many museums and art galleries are free. Excellent!

I wonder when I will be able to do things without this underlying sadness and the thought that "Jim would have enjoyed this." There were other exhibits that we looked at, but I had to skip the one with painting of scenes from the Civil War battles and the Indian Wars, because Jim would have REALLY enjoyed that!

We ran into Tara and Richard, who were touring with his parents. It's nice that, in a city the size that Austin has become, I can still run into somebody I know at an art exhibit. Particularly since I go to them so rarely.

  1. Chicken fried steak, yum!

Free museum day? What a great idea. Of course, it's not as if Michigan is teeming with museums I'd want to see.

  2. Chicago used to do that. That's how I got to go visit Picasso's "Old Man and Guitar," which is my all-time favourite painting. It's there, in all its original glory. You can imagine my heartstopping joy to come onto it unexpectedly! I was very ignorant of Chicago and what it had to offer. In this day and age, I would have known about it, but I did not. I had loved the painting since seeing a tiny print of it in an old encyclopedia.

  3. Could you just enlighten me about the kind of breakfast you would get at the Cafe, Ronni. Is it similar to the English fry up?

I much prefer pancakes and maple syrup to anything else. They are so quick to whip up and I love them dripping with butter. I know, I know. Bad! (Only on Sunday)

Saturdays the family rushes out to get our 'stuff' done and we might, not often, have a type of brunch at the supermarket. This could be just about anything from roast chicken, steak pie, pasta, salad or chips and beans. LHAT. Some first meal! Urgh.

  4. Brendan had chicken fried steak, which is a tenderized beef steak, battered and fried, with cream (here, called "country") gravy, scrambled eggs, hash browns (a grated potato patty, fried) and buscuits (like scones, but not sweet). I had a half order of SOS, which is a biscuit with white gravy in which a couple of sausage patties have been chopped up.

Pancakes were available, but we weren't in the moot.

  6. I don't think you'll ever stop thinking Jim would have enjoyed something. You wouldn't want to right? I bet though, that it won't be as sad to think of it, with time.

What a GREAT day I would've had, in your shoes.

  7. Hi Ronni, I am glad you and Brendan had a nice time together at Breakfast.

I still to this day say things like my mum or gran would have loved this, it's ok darling, as time goes by the grief is not so raw, and it a little more manageable.

How are the cats settling, and have you found any homes yet?

  8. Possum, I have not yet got a poster made to put up at Jim's school.

I have several things to sell on Craig's List, but haven't got to that, either. There are not enough hours in the day.

  11. Slapping head here, Ronni. I've only just realised that there are a few menus listed with your link.

Some days I wonder how I manage to dress myself. LHAT
