Tom O'Hawk

This is a character from a melodrama. It was costumed by Charyl and myself in the summer of 1983. It was the first show I had been asked to costume, and I was too scared to do it myself. I think this particular costume owed more to Charyl than it did to me. The play was called "The Good, the Bad and the Broccoli," and B J Machalicek directed it.

This kid's mother threatened to have me come over and clean her shower. All that brown colour on his skin is a compound known as Texas Red Dirt. Apparently, it gunks up a tub.

Sam Bass Theater is doing a melodrama for the opening of next season. The director is going to teach a master class in the Melodrama style of acting. I hope I can take the class. One of the most difficult lessons for me to learn in theater has been to make my gestures and expressions big enough to read in the back row. A class in Melodrama would fix that in a heartbeat.

Thinking about one melodrama reminded me of another, hence this picture.

Popcorn, anyone?

  1. You must be so glad that you had the courage to start making costumes. What fun!

  2. Well, I had always made costumes; just not to put out there on stage for people to criticise. It was very scary!
