"In order to avoid offending religious fundamentalists, our National Park Service is under orders to suspend its belief in geology," stated PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch. "It is disconcerting that the official position of a national park as to the geologic age of the Grand Canyon is 'no comment.'"
Does this make any sense at all? Dammit, I have as much respect for the beliefs of others as is humanly possible, but when such beliefs fly in the face of science, I lose patience with them.
I was raised in the Anglican Church, and differences between the Bible and Science were glossed over (who knows how long "a day" is to God, anyway). Nobody was ever so arrogant as to say that God has to work by Man's timeline.

Richard Leakey is a tad bit ticked off.
Bishop Adoyo said all the country's churches would unite to force the museum to change its focus when it reopens after 18 months of renovations in June next year.
"We will write to them, we will call them, we will make sure our people know about this and we will see what we can do to make our voice known," he said.
Dr Leakey said the churches' plans were "the most outrageous comments I have ever heard".
This is terrorism in the promotion of ignorance. Who are these people to dictate what the rest of us should believe?
Oh my goodness, Ronni, that's just insane! I totally agree with you.
ReplyDeleteAs a former national park ranger, I was skeptial of PEER's claims. After researching the matter, I found most of the claims to be wildly unsubstantiated and blatantly false.
ReplyDeleteAlso consider that the bookstore in question is operated by the Grand Canyon Association, a PRIVATE, non-profit organization, not the government. They also sell American Indian books with creation myths. The book in question is in the "inspirational" section.
Don't believe everything you read:

Thank you for your perspective, Ranger X. Your blog is very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI shall do some further reading.
