The Only Time I Ever Skipped School

Many thanks to Virginia Persson for the picture!

The School district was so small that I think it had five schools; three elementaries and two secondaries. Chemainus Secondary, the one I attended, had maybe 500 students from 8th to 12th grades. Ladysmith Secondary was about the same size. Between the two schools, we managed to send one team to "Reach for the Top," a local quiz show on a TV station out of Nanaimo.

The team consisted of two students from each of the schools, and an alternate. We won the first round! WooHoo! I don't think the Chemainus/Ladysmith (Island Central) team had ever made it out of the first round before.

The next competition, three busloads of students came to be in the audience, and carloads besides. It was like something out of "Hoosiers."

We were holding our own pretty well, until the question was asked, "What do you call the Member of Parliament responsible for rounding up the members of his party to vote?" I hit the button...and nothing came out of my mouth. I had completely blanked. Of course the opposing team answered the question correctly and went on to win.

The three of us from Chemainus, two contestants and the alternate, determined that attending school the next day would be just too awful, so we rounded up Virginia's Russ, with his car, and went to Victoria, instead.

We heard later that the Ladysmith kids had not gone to school, either.

Nothing was ever said to any of us; by the school or our parents.

I never again forgot that the answer is "The Whip."
