I cannot even believe this is being given serious consideration!
KXAN, where I just heard this story, doesn't even have it up on its website yet.
There is a push on to remove all statues of Confederate heroes of the Civil War from the University of Texas campus. I remember seeing one of Jefferson Davis and one of Robert E. Lee, and there are several more.
What the hell is going on here?
This country had a Civil War, between 1861 and 1865. Texas was a Confederate state. The Confederates lost the war. Are they to be expunged from history? Are students who are temporary residents at best, to be allowed to dictate history to all of us? What's next? Tear down The Wall? After all, Viet Nam was not the most beloved war story in our history. Oh, wait. Those soldiers are still alive. We shall have to put off the laundering of that bit of our history for a few years yet.
If looking at a statue of Robert E. Lee or Jefferson Davis offends your sensibilities, then I have the perfect solution.
DON'T LOOK AT IT!!!

Grr.
I am "glad" to know our state isn't the only one trying to rewrite history for those who might be offended by it. In TN, we have a huge statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest on his horse (with the horse's ass facing the North hee hee) in the big park in downtown square. Every so often a big stink is raised about him being a General in the Conferderate army and how that offends some poeple and it needs to be removed.
ReplyDeleteIt's history, people. Learn something from it.
I think these people have a lot in common with those who want us to think the Holocaust never happened.
ReplyDeleteI remember being shocked when my son was sent home from Junior high for wearing a t-shirt with the Confederate flag on it. There were no derogatory words on it. The Vice Principal, who was African American said it was racist against African Americans.
ReplyDeleteIf we're talking Tshirts, when Chandra was in Middle School, the Powers That Be decided that any references to the devil were to be eliminated, in response to someone's paranoia about satanism. This resulted in a kid being sent home for wearing a Duke Blue Devils basketball jacket!
ReplyDeleteHow stoopid can they possibly get?
Now that's just nuts. That definitely goes too far.
