St. Richard's (Episcopal)
Isn't this spiffy!
In other places, Lutheran churches have red doors; here, it's the Episcopal. The red symbolizes the blood of Christ. The flag flying below the Stars and Stripes is St. George's cross, the English portion of the Union Jack.
I have friends who are very active in this church, and used to attend occasionally when the congregation was headquartered in a much more modest building.
I grew up in the Church of England, and the Anglican Church of Canada. Used to be that St. Richard's used the old prayerbook once a month, and those were the services I would attend, for the comfort factor. Indeed, when visiting in Canada for my dad's funeral, my stepmom was surprised that I still knew the Matins service. It's like riding a bicycle, Joan.
There is an Anglican church here in Round Rock. You see, the Episcopal Church has progressed in the matter of ordaining women, etc., and there are Anglicans who don't approve of that. So they have their own church, where they use the old prayerbook all the time, and pretend they still live in the past.
St. Richard's, as you can see, is all about tradition, but also about being progressive, and planting the Episcopal church firmly in the 21st century.

NIiiIiice! Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Shelby_Spong
ReplyDeleteJohn Shelby Spong is also the subject of "A Pebble In My Shoe." http://www.willandcompany.com/pebble/
... the show was recently performed at Unity, where I attend church. Bishop Spong joins us as a guest speaker yearly, also.
Heya! Where is St. Richard's, could you tell me? The rest of my family is looking for a traditional Episcopalian church that's still moderately progressive. (My sister-in-law's father is an episcopalian priest). The church they've been going to recently decided they were Baptists in Episcopal's clothing. ;)
ReplyDeleteSt Richard's is east of IH 35, on Hwy 79, a couple of miles. It's on the north side of 79, just west of 1460.
ReplyDeleteIt's a friendly church, and a couple who used to be very active at the theater are still very active there.
