Good Hope--Another Hidden Church

Chisholm Trail runs out in a grassy park area just to the right of this church. This is Good Hope Baptist, the oldest African/American church in Round Rock. It's hidden out behind the go-cart track, by the paint ball range.

Before there was a go-cart track, paint ball range, or, indeed, even the shopping center, there was a baseball field back in here, and Old Settlers' park was where the shopping center is today. I did not know the ball field was gone until I went back there to find it for my parks series.

  1. Nothing seems to change for the better these days, Ronni. Of course, it may not be the same where you are.

Over here, there are very few community centres for the youth to get together and socialise or do sports. It all seems to be about Soccer in this country, which has turned into sectarian violence, on the whole. Very disappointing!

Are supermarkets really more important than, community areas?

  2. I may have to do an entry on Old Settlers Park. When they built the shopping center, they granted the Old Settlers' Association a huge acreage out east of town. That area has since been developed into a lovely park, with many ballfields, an artificial lake, hike and bike trails, frisbee-golf, and pavilions, playgrounds and parking. After they did that, came the professional baseball complex adjacent to that. Partially funded by Dell, and called the Dell Diamond, the field is home to the Round Rock Express, a AAA baseball team. For those of you who, like Mgt, probably have no idea what that means, it's the highest level of Minor League ball. This is where they train the guys who will play for the Houston Astros.

  3. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Old Settlers didn't get such a bad deal.

I just enjoyed having the park within walking distance, as all those changes happened before I had a car.

  4. That sounds wonderful, Ronni.

We have a massive park a couple of hundred yards from where we live. Unfortunately, it is over-run with yobs and crack-heads from the area.

There is a mini lake with ducks, which my grandson would love to visit. A nice place for me to sit under a tree and read my book, but I wouldn't dare.

My fears are probably unfounded, but I have heard too many stories from colleagues.

You know, I think I will give it a try!

  5. Maybe you can round up a small group of grandmas and mommies? Safety in numbers, I always say. A lot of places around here that have gone that way, the citizens have gone out in large numbers to take the parks back, patrolling and calling the police when they see something illegal going on. The campaigns have been very effective.
