This is First Baptist Church of Round Rock. This building has been up for maybe 25 years, or a bit more. It replaced a smaller, limestone building that had slag glass windows and was far less impressive, but much more welcoming. This church suffers from sprawl. Quite a few small inexpensive houses have been sacrificed to provide space for outbuildings and parking lots for this behemoth. A street was even closed off to provide parking.
I remember it being built, and the steeple is plastic. That about says it all.
I actually attended this church for a while. I was in one of its first Christmas plays. Being in the play was a very good experience, thanks to the director, ChiChi Cornelius, and Debby Dean, the person who was in charge of the Drama Ministry.
The church itself; not so much. For starters, we divorcées were segregated from the rest of the congregation for Sunday school and Bible Study. Then, my children were encouraged to bring in their pennies to support missions. I was willing to go along with that, even being the poverty-stricken single mother that I was, until I received first-hand knowledge that one missionary couple was making enough money to send home funds to have an in-ground sprinkler system installed in their retirement home.
Something wrong there.
