A Picture Worth a Thousand Words

Here is what the Freer Gallery website has to say about this painting.

It was difficult to get a good picture of it, as it hangs in a staircase (it's very large), and there are two light fixtures in the way. I thought it was beautiful, and, seeing the sadness and determination on the faces of the children, I was not surprised to read that these are the artist's children, and the portrait was painted after the death of their mother.

I wish I could afford reproductions of all the paintings I love!

  1. Just popped in to say hi, Ronni. That is a wonderful picture. I love the colour he has used for her dress.

    Wishing you a good weekend...

  3. I like the bright, clear colours. Such symmetry. I think it must be difficult to paint your own family--looking at your children as shapes and forms...

  4. Somehow, your picture has brought the colours to life.

I need to go to an art gallery to see some beautiful paintings. I believe we have a wonderful gallery at the Kelvin Hall.

  7. Thanks so much for that, Ronni. I have passed the gallery on numerous occasions. It is situated a block away from the hospital where I had my treatment.

Most of the people on the bus were getting off at the Gallery, I was getting off at the next stop. lol

I really must try to find the time. Don't really want to go on my own, though.

  8. They're all stepping into the light. Them's with their right leg, her with her left. But she's bent to trip.

He gives her wings of clouds and the wisps of her hair. What a fabulous painting.

  9. I was mesmerized by this picture the first time I saw it at the museum.

I just love it and am so happy that you put it up here for all of us to enjoy again.

  10. It's funny--I am totally ignorant about art. To appeal to me, a painting has to have some sort of story to tell.
