Harper's Ferry

The Shenandoah flows into the Potomac here.

I've not been many places where I could look down on some slate tile roofs.

Harper's Ferry can't seem to decide if it wants to be a museum or a tourist trap. The old buildings and byways are interesting, but the atmosphere seems all wrong. Can't really be more specific, and maybe it was just too hot to enjoy walking around, up hills and steps, and up more hills and steps.

Maybe I should go back in the Winter.

  1. Hi Ronni, you are getting some great shots. What is the temperature? Have you been getting rain?

  2. We got hit with rain driving the Blue Ridge Parkway through North Carolina. None since then. It was quite hot today, and, still is. It's hotter than it was when Jim and I were here five years ago. Maybe upper 80s or lower 90s. Cooler than Texas, for sure!

  3. We got a dose of heat when we came down to New York from Canada, it was in the high 90's. The scenery where you are is beautiful. I will get back there one day. I would like to hire an RV.

  4. I'd have to hire somebody to drive it. I've never driven anything bigger than the suburban, and much prefer driving little things that can go more places...

  5. loving the pictures, Ronni.

I would love to do an unplanned trip around Scotland. Not sure that I would like driving, though. There must be a great sense of freedom, staying over whenever a place takes your fancy.

Have a great time. I'll check in on Monday. Most of the staff will be off as it is a public holiday in Scotland.

Are you on your way home soon?

  7. Ronni,

I visited Harper's Ferry in Winter and had the same impressions you are getting of the place.

We were starting up the long climb to Jefferson's Rock and a couple were coming down and said," It's really not worth the trek, do something else."

But,all in all, we liked it and the views and scenery in Virginia are spectacular...

Enjoy your trip. Sounds like you are!

  8. Sucky rooftops, but I was inspired to spontaneously combust into a chorus of:

Shenandoah, I long to hear you,
    Away, you rolling river.
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you.
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.

I'm loving following you with my atlas and looking forward to your next installment.

  10. Wow that is an old song..I really had to think on it to remember it..this is the one I thought of when I saw all the pictures!

    Almost heaven, west virginia
    Blue ridge mountains, shenandoah river
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

    Country roads, take me home
    To the place, I be-long
    West virginia, mountain momma
    Take me home, country roads

All my memries, gather round her
Miners lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

    Country roads, take me home
    To the place, I be-long
    West virginia, mountain momma
    Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice, in the mornin hours she calls to me
The radio reminds me of my home far a-way
And drivin down the road I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

    Country roads, take me home
    To the place, I be-long
    West virginia, mountain momma
    Take me home, country roads

  11. We were in Harper's Ferry when my husband and I first married some 30years ago. I was too young to appreciate the history but I do remember the beauty!
