I got news for y'all.
You may not realize it, but Austin Avenue, which runs behind your church, is a PUBLIC STREET. Your parking lot is across Austin Avenue from your church. Austin Avenue is not your parking lot. There is on-street parking there, but it is a PUBLIC STREET. Parking right by the stop sign, even though it obscures the stop sign, does not negate the stop sign.
People who do not attend your church drive up and down Austin Avenue every day. I suppose people who do belong to your church drive up and down it, too. It is a public street. At the cross streets, there are traffic signs. At Brown Street, there is a FOUR-WAY STOP. Yes, even the part of Brown Street that became your "Disabled" parking lot has a STOP SIGN. You are required by law to stop before exiting onto Austin Ave. That's what that red octagon with the word "STOP" on it means.
It also helps when you actually look for oncoming cars before crossing Austin Avenue on foot. And, when you stop to unload kids, bicycles, or pot luck supper items, it is much appreciated if you either pull to one side or the other, pull into the parking lot, or at least put on your hazard lights. Appreciated by whom? You may ask. I have an answer. Appreciated by the people who drive on that street to get from Mays Street to Round Rock Avenue.
BECAUSE IT IS A PUBLIC STREET!
OK, let's review. Here are the rules.
~~Do not block the stop sign when you park.
~~Stop at the stop sign (novel concept).
~~Watch for traffic when crossing the STREET.
~~Do not stop in the middle of the STREET for loading or unloading.
Are we clear?
You may be the biggest, most "socially acceptable" church in town, but you don't own the place.
Yet.
First Baptist Church. There's a map of the "campus" showing the parking and the streets.
Rip those Baptix a new one Ronni!
ReplyDeleteDon't get me started. This is ignorance at its worst!
ReplyDeleteThe campus at First Baptist Church of Round Rock is used by many people, members and non-members alike. Many events, meetings, and other activities are held at the campus, and not all are specific to the church. There are not enough parking lot spaces, and thus the streets are used, just as many other places aound town do. Certainly, anyone should follow the rules and use common courtesy when choosing parking and drop-off sites around the church, or anywhere, for that matter. These choices, however, are made by the individual and not by First Baptist Church itself. As both a member of the church and a daily visitor to other areas in the downtown Round Rock area, I agree that improper street parking or drop-offs can cause problems for others drivers. But, please, don't blame the whole church. Come visit us instead. You'll be very welcome!
ReplyDeleteWhy not put your name where your opinion is?
ReplyDeleteI have "visited" your church. I played the star in "One Clear Star," a Christmas play you put on in 1986.
I have attended your church, and did not feel welcome at all.
In fact, stay tuned for the story.
