So I go to the grocery store to stock up on a few things. One of them is peanut oil. Much to my surprise, there isn't any. So I ask a clerk. Seems there isn't going to be any for the foreseeable future.
What the HELL?!!
There are people out there allergic to it...OK, I understand that. So I have some advice for them:
DON'T BUY IT!
I, on the other hand, am NOT allergic to it. My son is not allergic to it. Nobody I know is allergic to peanuts.
SO, WHY CAN'T I BUY SOME FARDLING PEANUT OIL?!
When they locked up the spray paint, I went along. It's a pain in the arse to have to get a clerk at Hobby Lobby (and we all know how difficult THAT is!) to open the damn cupboard and get me four cans of silver, but we can't allow the younger generation to fry their brain cells, now can we?
When they started making me sign a book and show my ID and be treated like a damn criminal to get a box of effing Sudafed, I went along. I grumbled (whined, bitched, moaned and complained), but, if I wanted my nose to stop running, I had to go along.
But THIS is ridiculous. Outrageous! There is, I'm willing to bet, not one substance on this green earth that SOMEBODY is not allergic to. Removing peanut oil from the shelves of the local grocery is starting down a slippery slope. Did you know there are those who are allergic to wheat gluten? Let's ban that. That takes care of bread, flour, cereal, tortillas, cakes, crackers, cookies, and all sorts of other stuff with flour in it. Never mind eggs. Or sugar. Or milk.
Why sell anything?
LET'S ALL JUST STARVE!
But, by all means, let's protect people from their own bodies!
I could chew nails and spit rust!
You are making me laugh! I have a bottle of peanut oil. Shall I send it to you? I haven't noticed this latest scandal. I will certainly check all my grocery stores and let you know. I have the fardling drixoral body search and fingerprinting drivers license annoyance too. How many grannys do you know who manufacture meth? Fascist state we live in! What are you going to cook with? The peanut oil controversy. What about peanut butter? Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteOh for crying out loud! I happen to be allergic to peanuts, and I find that utterly silly! Just because I don't need to buy the stuff doesn't make it absolutely brilliant for other people! Sheesh. I'm allergic to soy, too. They gonna remove all soy products now? Heh. Do you have a Sam's membership? I -think- I saw peanut oil there in quantity. If not, if you like, I'll pick some up for you, easy as pie. Just ludicrous what they do to 'protect' people.
ReplyDeleteSeriously?? No peanut oil?? What am I going to do when I want fondue? The fuel for my vintage pot is hard enough to find. Now I have to go on a hunt for the oil, too? Ugh, so annoying! I have a nice cache right now, but I'll be sure to be on the lookout. Thanks for the warning! And I hope you find some soon.... Peanut oil is good oil, darnit!
ReplyDeleteHey, I just bought canola oil today from the HEB PLUS on 79 in Round Rock, toward the Dell diamond. And they carry peanut oil. I saw it specifically because I was looking to see how much more it is than canola (a lot more, btw) So not all stores have taken it off shelves and they'd better not because I will be right there to picket and bitch right with you! Allergic? Don't eat it.
ReplyDeleteApparently, the thing with the peanut oil is that a pan that has been used with it can retain the allergen even after it's been cleaned and another oil put in it.
ReplyDeleteMarsha, thanks...I hate that HEB Plus, but that just might get me in there, considering that the one out 620, which is where there was no peanut oil, is no longer carrying what I need.
Don't buy Canola oil. At least, not without googling it first. I remember reading something bad about it, but can't remember what it was. I boycotted it from the get-go because of the situation between England and the Common Market at the time it was introduced. I felt vindicated later on when there was some sort of health issue associated with it.
You can use canola oil. Snopes.com affirms that it is safe, and all the rumors about glaucoma and whatnot were a hoax.

ReplyDeleteSorry, here is the link.
And you are right about peanut oil. All oils get stuck to a pan (which makes the pan good btw)
But if you have a person in your life with a nut allergy, you have to ask them to bring their own damn pans to your house lol.
They ARE bad though. I remember reading an article where this woman almost died because she inadvertantly touched the hand of someone at a wedding who had eaten nuts, then she inadvertantly touched her mouth.
Thanks for the clarification, Melissa. I'd hate to become part of an unfounded scare campaign. I first heard of Canola oil in 1989, when visiting England. I asked what the plant was that I was seeing acres of, as I didn't remember it from when I was a child there. I was told that the ECM (this was before the European Union) had decreed that English farmers must grow rapeseed oil instead of traditional crops. The mere thought of plowing apple orchards under to grow this stuff was enough to make me boycott it, and I have, to this day.
ReplyDeleteThat is just stupid, and what about peanut butter? My grandson seems to be allergic to barley so we just leave it out of the soup, no big deal.
ReplyDeleteRonni, begging your pardon...I forgot to thank you for the Xmas card. I was really touched that you went to the trouble.
We shared a wee dram on Hogmanay for you and wished you serenity and prosperity for 2008.
Sounds lovely, Mgt! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteRonni, I'm allergic to walnuts. Also I don't like mayo and spices make my tummy hurt. Could we please have all these things removed from stores, restaurants, private homes etc.? Because one day in a fit of forgetfulness I just may go out, purchase and consume all those things I know perfectly well are bad for me. It's very gracious of the stores to assume I have lost the ability, and common sense to avoid these things on my own. Surely society as a whole is willing to do without just so I can be protected from my own irresponsibility, right? Ooh! And while we're at it, I have some allergies differnt meds. Alert the hospitals so they can pull those things from the pharmacy! Sheesh!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that HEB will get right on it.
ReplyDeletePerhaps we just need to post signs "Living is Carcinogenic." How about bumper stickers.
ReplyDeleteBetty
What an inane & unwarranted thing to do.
ReplyDeletePeanut allergies can be fatal. So too can seafood allergies - especially shellfish.
I assume they have taken similar action to rid their shelves of canned shrimp & the like.
I thought that canola posed a transfat issue. Just remember that I am witless and have not googled that up. Well, I just did and it seems that olive and canola are the reducers of cholesterol. They are mono-saturated. Palm, coconut, etc are poly. Shoot, today I think I may have had some lard at La Mexicana Restaurant today. So sue moi.
ReplyDeleteCan this be true? Are they not making peanut oil anymore? There is no such thing as Chinese food without peanut oil.
ReplyDeleteIs this a national ban? A state ban? A supermarket ban?
This is soooooo stupid. As you say, if anyone at your house is allergic to peanuts - DON'T BUY IT.
Eggplant makes me sick. Let's ban it. Anyone who takes Lipitor (which is the most widely used drug in the U.S.), can't have grapefruit. Let's ban it just in case they forget.
I've never heard anything so nuts - pun unintended, but there you are.
Apparently, it's not wide at all. It seems that it's only this branch of this particular supermarket. I did fill out a form requesting they carry it, so we'll see what happens.
ReplyDeleteI think if the store is not carrying peanut oil, its not because some people are allergic to it. Its because they can't afford the insurance to pay the lawsuit that might occur if someone goes into anaphylactic shock on site. Sadly, there really are people who have such sensitivities to that lowly legume. Most other food allergies that I know of don't present themselves so quickly and dangerously. I guess the peanut is the Double O-7 of the Nut world....tracie
ReplyDelete...And yet, they still carry peanuts, peanut butter, and all kinds of peanut candy.
ReplyDeleteI don't get it.
Geeze, Vero, Walmart had tons of it over the holidays for frying your turkeys. It was available in large tins.
ReplyDeleteNow, why would I want to go to Walmart when there's a perfectly good HEB less than a mile away?
ReplyDeleteStill, I do go there to get $1/yd fabric, so I will remember to get some next time I'm there.
Thanks, Cap'n!
You're right, Ronni. Stores wouldn't have peanut butter, etc if they were truly afraid of allergies. Maybe the reason is....they have too much peanut oil or too little left over after Thanksgiving, and their stock needs to be either replenished or refilled from the barrels of peanut oil still available. ...tracie
ReplyDeleteHere's one for you: Last week we had wide-spread power outages. On the first day, just a couple of hours into it, the old man stopped at the local Safeway on his way home from work. Apparently they weren't selling any meat, had closed the deli and ROPED OFF the frozen food aisle. When he asked why, the clerk told him that they didn't want anybody getting sick.
ReplyDeleteGeez, it's gotten bad when the supermarket feels like it's got to protect me from myself. Doh!
We lost power at the sangwidge shop, and had to throw everything out within two hours. It's a huge waste!
