I just received this in an email, with the following text:
This awesome picture was taken in the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana on August 6,2007 by a fire behavior analyst from Fairbanks, Alaska, by the name of John McColgan, with a Digital camera.
Since he was working while he took the picture, he cannot sell or profit from it, so he should at least be recognized as the photographer of this once-in-a-lifetime shot. Please forward this on to your email contacts. Maybe someday it will get back to him and we can show him that he has indeed been recognized for his efforts!
ETA, see comments.
I'm leaving it up, though. Where and when it was taken is of secondary significance compared with the photo itself.
I saw this photograph on Flickr a while back and someone had claimed as theirs and said it was taken during the Greek forest fires. This was refuted by others. I wonder if it's still up?

ReplyDeleteThis isn't the one I saw originally. But someone is making money out of it!
I don't recall exactly but the people who challenged the photo I saw said it was taken in the USA.
Partially true, the photo was taken by John McColgan, but in 2000 rather than in 2007.

It's an unfortunate part of the internet that photos like this make the rounds every time there are major forest fires...
I know nuttin! It's a stunning picture, though.
ReplyDelete'tis a lovely one...I used it for my wallpaper on my desktop computer back at #ell, years ago.
ReplyDeleteThe thing I hate about the internet:
So much mis-information.
The think I love about the internet:
Being able to research and find the truth if you know how to use search engines and read between the lines.
