Kiphen Road

Now that Burbie is up and running again, I went out to Kiphen Road at lunch today, just to see what they are building out there. For those of you new to our area, Kiphen Road is the extension of Old Settlers' Blvd East of 1460. It's an old farm road, and runs along the back side of Old Settlers' Park.

When we lived out there from 1978 to 1980, it looked like this.

We lived in an old farm house that no longer exists. The view was Johnson Grass and distant small trees, in every direction. Now, suddenly, it looks like this.

And still more coming.

It's a tiny two-lane road. It is a shame that they built all those houses in a development called Settlers' Landing before they worked on the road.

I'll tell you what, though. The air still smells of the horse mint and other wild flowers that grow out there, and the hot South wind still blows a steady 35 mph, and the sky is still full of those puffy clouds.

The cattle, cotton and corn have been replaced with people, that's all.

  1. I mourn those lost open fields -- the world has gotten too crowded!

  2. I really got a feel for how it must have been to live in Texas back in the Olden Times. The house was 90 years old, and had been towed on rollers by a mule to its site. It had no air conditioning, and was haunted as could be. It was a very strange place to live. The sound of the wind was constant.

I cried when I went out there, and smelled the air. It smelled as I remembered, but I couldn't even find the exact site of the house, it is so built-up.

  3. Ronni, 'they've' blocked me from the pictures. Please send them to my email when you get a chance.

I will just go and check the gallery, in the meanwhile.
