What the hell!
Celebrate Veterans' Day by buying crap in a department store sale?
CELEBRATE Veterans' Day?
I'm sorry...did I miss something?
Here I've always thought that Veterans' Day, which used to be called Remembrance Day, was a time to remember all of those soldiers who gave their lives so that the rest of us could live in a free country.
We used to wear poppies in honour of WWI vets, and endure moments of silence and poetry readings ("In Flanders' Fields"). I guess that, since the WWI vets are no longer with us, it's now OK to head out to the mall and buy a bunch of stuff instead. Any old excuse for a good sale, right?
Grrr...
Not defending this, as I think we should honor veterans regardless of opinions of fighting/wars. (Peacenik me. ;) On the other hand, it's a chance for our poor young men that are recent vets to do some shopping for less. Goodness knows the government's giving them diddly if they manage to actually not be retained after their time. (Sorry, feeling bad for poor baby brother who's getting yanked about by the VA.) But I do agree with honoring these guys. They deserve it more than I can say.
ReplyDeleteLisa F, I agree the Government could and should do lots more for our Veterans. It seems they are owed much more than they are given, both in terms of respect and financial compensation.
