It has been a very busy weekend in Ronni-land! We had performances of the One Act Plays every day. Jim and I are each in two of the three.
This was supposed to be my down time. Between "Arsenic and Old Lace," in which I played Martha Brewster, and "All My Sons," which I am directing, there was supposed to be a break. Still, there are people out there who will audition for plays and then drop out, as if accepting a role did not constitute an obligation to see it through all the way to Strike. When that happens, somebody has to take up the slack. Jim and I are not going to let our new directors down.
Of course, the whole One Act experience was complicated from the start by the fact that one of the proposed directors dropped out on the first evening of the auditions. That caused a major reshuffle. Christina had planned on directing "The Patient," and Michael, "Trifles." Instead, Christina wound up with both of those while Michael took over "Sepulchre of Songs" from Leila. Also, for some reason, not as many actors came to the auditions as do for mainstage plays, and so most of the people cast appear in more than one of the plays. I have to say, many thanks to Marc, Laura and Mark, who are in all three! Our One Act Play Festival is also our Director's Workshop. We allow qualified people to direct a one-act play, under the supervision of a mentor. This is one way of getting new directors.
Ramona and I are very busy at A Cut Above Costumes, with "Meet Me In St. Louis" going out tomorrow, and several other large shows in the works for later in the week. We don't even have everything from Halloween put away yet!
I had the first night of auditions for "All My Sons" last night, and I sure hope I get some more older men at tonight's audition. At present, the best Kate I have is in her 60's, and the best Joe is in his 30's. Not going to work. Ideally, both should be in their 50's, but this is community theater. We do the best we can with what we have to work with. Wish me luck with this project; it looks as if I'm going to need it! Traditionally, we get more actors at the Monday auditions than at the Sunday ones, so things may look better after this evening.
I am also trying to figure out who is going to read what in my Readers' Theater performance of "Madwoman of Chaillot," which is on the calendar for Thanksgiving weekend.
Not to mention that the Thundercloud schedule was made up two days early, and, when I went to request Tuesday off, lo and behold, I was already scheduled to work. So, now I have to find somebody willing to switch my Tuesday for Wednesday or Thursday. Not so very easy on short notice!
Housework has been neglected, as well, and a couple of days spent on house and yard would be a very good thing.
Believe me, I'd be sleeping right now, if I could!
