While out and about in Round Rock today, I found this. The poor old thing is sitting out in the weather at Lee's Auto Body. I spoke to Lee, and he said that the City won't let the Fire Department keep it in a Firehouse any more. It has been sitting out at Lee's for a few months. It runs--Lee moves it to mow.
This is the fire truck that I rode on in a Frontier Days Parade, back in the days of the Fire Department Auxiliary. It makes me very sad, and angry to see it left outside, after all its years of faithful service.
Who knows how many homes this truck saved; how many lives? And yet, here it is, a part of Round Rock's history, left to rot.
The pic with the chorus line in it is the Auxiliary, back in maybe 1983, taken at the back of this same truck.
Incidentally, that pic was taken outside what was then "the new fire station," up off North Mays across the street from the health department and the office where you get your car tags. Looking North. There was NOTHING out there! Old Settlers' Blvd was not even a gleam in anybody's eye, let alone those plastics plants that uglify the landscape now!
Why don't you hang a sign on it asking for volunteers to build a car-port for the old beauty.
ReplyDeleteYou just never know...!
You are doing Round Rock a great service, here. I hope the people who can make a difference are reading this.
ReplyDeleteThe firemen have done their best to put the thing in a place that is fairly visible. Thanks to Lee's Auto Body for storing it.
