The Uffington Horse

The girls and I visited this chalk carving in 1989. My sister, bless her heart, loaded her roommate and her daughters, and the three of us into her old Volvo station wagon in Greenwich, and we drove to Berkshire. We looked at Silbury Hill and another Hill Horse along the way to Avebury, and went to see the Uffington Horse and Wayland's Smithy after.

It was a busy day!

The Uffington Horse is fascinating to me, because it cannot be properly seen from anywhere on the ground. I walked all over the hill around it, and, from a way off can be seen that there is a figure cut in the chalk, but it can't be identified.

Adjacent to the Horse is a hill which has a permanent bald spot on the top. This one is said to be where St. George slew the dragon. Never mind that St. George never set foot in England!

The second link has a lot of pictures.
