The shore of Lake Michigan, at the southern end near Dunes State Park, is nice in the summer. The sand is fine and soft, and the water, refreshing. The daytime temperatures are comfortable compared with Texas, and it gets cool enough at night to throw on a cotton shirt. But, it's not so cool that a moonlight swim is out of the question.
It was a tiny resort, with a small community of summer cottages surrounding it. Everybody knew every one and their dog, and stuff was left on the beach all the time. Swimming at night has a different feel to it from daytime splashing. The lake looks black, with silver ripples reflecting the moonlight. Voices and splashes are muted. So when your head emerges from underwater and you see a huge dog, silhouetted against the moon, sitting upright on the ripples, it gives you a bit of a turn.
Until you notice that it's only Nohay, a neighbour's oversized German Shepherd, who has commandeered a foam float for his own moonlight pleasure.
Hi Ronni - I was just cruising thru your interesting and funny blog and came across this entry. You have made me so homesick I have tears in my eyes. This entry fits the memories I have of a small resort on Lake Michigan that Lou, the kids and I went to every summer. We also did night swimming, but when the kids were in bed. I also remember the sand toys, beach toys and towels being left in place. No one hauled all their stuff to the cabins every night 'cause they would just have to haul it back in the morning. No one stole anything and by the end of two days everyone was like family. Year after year the same people were at this resort and it was always like a huge family reunion. Those were the days, my friend. Thanks honey for the memories.

I fixed it!
ReplyDeleteGrandmaMouse, was it at the south end? We were just to the east of Dunes State Park.
