Collecting Things

My mother-in-law collected barrel decanters. She had maybe 200 of them, ranging from little ceramic ones to sterling silver. Many are beautiful. She also collected mushrooms; everything from dish towels to jewelry. Oh, and hummingbirds. Mustn't forget the hummingbirds.

She was a very stubborn woman.

She decided that I should have a collection of something, also. After giving the matter careful thought taking my interests into consideration, she decided that I should collect sewing machines.

Right.

Three consoles, three portables and two treadles later, I had to beg her to quit. "Please, Addy," I said. "Maybe I should collect something smaller."

It took some doing, but I eventually convinced her that costume jewelry was a good thing to collect. Quite a bit of it can be stored in the space of just one sewing machine. Really. I had enough vintage rhinestones to supply almost the entire cast of "The Women" with sparkle.

I also have a soft spot for Gunne Sax and anything else designed by Jessica McClintock. Especially retro gowns.

And books about King Arthur. Especially vintage ones.
