This post comes under the heading of General Whingeing.
I am 56 years old. I have never really taken care of myself, with regard to exercise, skin care, etc., and now I'm paying the price.
Twelve years ago, I rode a bike five miles a day, to a job where I stood in one spot and flailed my arms for 8 hours or more. Total strangers used to ask if I worked out. I used to say,
"No, I just work!"
Two things (well, maybe three) have led to the decline of my physical well-being. The first is driving. I now drive everywhere, because, in this town, the places I need to go are scattered hither and yon. Second is the fact that I am no longer a single mother, hovering just above the line that makes one eligible for food stamps. Moms in that situation tend to be skinny, at least they do if they have any knowledge of nutrition and no money to spend on empty calories. The third is the acquisition of a husband who thinks that almost any food can be improved by the addition of sour cream, half and half or cheese, and who has never heard of margarine.
On the plus side, I have quit smoking. I started this blog as something to do with my hands while not smoking, and that (plus the "patch") worked. I haven't had a cigarette since August 29th of last year. However, I have gained 30 lbs.
I was going to yoga classes once a week, but had to quit when I started working.
My knees hurt, my ankles hurt, my back hurts. All of them. Most of the time. I think I'm keeping OTC painkiller manufacturers in business.
It's time to get a grip. I need to walk more, eat less and drink more water.
Expect updates.
Ronni: Thanks for such an honest post. Although I am almost half your age (almost), I am right there with you. Thanks for making me get the lead out too, and for your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteMichelle, if you "get the lead out" now, you probably will have formed the habit of diet and exercise by the time you need to start worrying. Kudos to you, and to all the young folks who look after themselves with a view to the future!
ReplyDeleteWell, thank you for inspiring all of us and reminding us that we better do it now if we don't want to "pay later." Loved your post. Be well :)
ReplyDeleteOver two years since I stopped smoking and I've probably 30 lbs on to. I'm not sure as I disposed of the depressing scales. I try to walk every day but the weight stays on! In my smoking days I used cigs as meal replacements. Also metabolism slows on giving up smoking and the menopause doesn't help. But despite that aren't we doing great? Better to have a big ass than to smoke I think!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Ronni!
ReplyDeleteI think everyone puts on weight when they give up smoking.
I gave up for 3 years when I was much younger. I put on about 10 lbs, which I gradually lost after a couple of years.
Now I am about 30 lbs overweight from just being me - not good!
I walk quite a distance each day, but not a step more than I have to, at the weekend.
I also have sore knees, back and shoulders, but there could be other reasons for that, than my weight.
I'm 54 this year, and I find that it is hard to budge the weight.
My diet is not too bad. Mostly tuna, crab meat, lots of salads with feta, blue cheese or parmesano. We hardly ever eat red meat.
I think you will slim down once your body has got used to not smoking.
Geez, I hope this hasn't depressed you!
A quick message to Martin, if I may Ronni.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are feeling well, fella!
Lisa, sure sounds like she knows how to cook. IMO, pizza, pasta! The food from heaven.
I agree it's better to be a bit heavy than to smoke. It's just that I've been skinny all my life, and I miss my waist. I feel dumpy.
ReplyDeleteSome people carry it off better than others, Ronni.
ReplyDeleteIIRC, in those Texas pictures, you looker really slim. So, 30 lbs probably doesn't look bad on you.
Heck, you are happy and healthy. What a blessing!
Good morning, Stacey.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your SIL's situation. It rather shocked me. You must be very concerned about her.
I hope you are feeling well, these days!
I came here thru CMHL, to LOL abt your Four stores and seven yrs ago...and found honesty and sincerity...a true person. I was reading your comments before I commented, and I am glad I did. I like how you said I'd rather be heavy than be a smoker. thank you. That makes me feel better too. I 'quit' when I first got preg in 1999...I would have the occassional social cig, but even that is getting less and less. ( I am just not social ) no, I dont really KNOW anyone who smokes anymore...except my mom. Hmmm. I am glad to have found you! Have a Great day, Ronni!
ReplyDeleteSuch nice comments from such nice people! Thank you. There will be more pics posted when we got shots from "The Women."
ReplyDeleteMgt, I think you thought you were at Stacey's--easy to do, as we use the same template! LOL! But she reads here, so may get the message anyway!
Thanks, ~d, and welcome!
Sorry Ronni, my mistake.
ReplyDeleteHeh! I usually check to see if she has shown up (at her place).
Thanks for seeing the funny side. Now, I feel a little discombobulated.
Oops, good morning to you!
It's all Blogspot's fault. A lot of their templates are the same old, same old, just in different colours. They only had maybe three I liked, and obviously, Stacey felt the same.
ReplyDeletePhew! Thanks Ronni. I thought it was my fault. Relief!
