Granny's Best Lesson
My grandmother and her two sisters were known as the Three Belles of Brecon. She was born in 1883, shortly before the book, "Little Lord Fauntleroy" was released. When she was a little girl, she went to a costume party (known in England as Fancy Dress) as the hero of that book.
One of the gustatory delights offered at the party was a currant cake. As Granny enjoyed currants above all, she picked them all out of the cake and lined them up around the edge of her plate, to be enjoyed when all the cake was gone. Unfortunately, the butler, assuming the currants had been removed because she didn't like them, whisked the plate away.
Granny used to tell this story as a lesson. Do not, she said, defer small pleasures, lest they vanish.
Deferring small pleasures became a habit for me, out of poverty, or busyness, or fear.
I have just realized that a norther is fixing to blow in, the temperature on my patio is 71°F, with soft sunlight and a gentle breeze. I'm going to take my coffee out there, feed the deer, and enjoy this perfect morning.
I hope all of you can find something to enjoy in yours.
