This is the real Hanging Tree, conveniently located right outside the courthouse in Goliad.
The Hanging Tree Restaurant is excellent, if you can get past the trophies on the walls. This beast is about three times the size of any antlered creature that roams in these parts. The mind boggles.
As you can see, I was a bit early for lunch.
I was feeling lunch-ish by the time I got to Goliad yesterday, and decided to do my usual thing, and drive around town, looking for a restaurant with a lot of cars outside. On the square in Goliad, there are two--The Impresario and The Hanging Tree. The Hanging Tree has a new chef who started yesterday, and a lunch special to die for. Under $8.00 got me three generous slices of tender pork loin, with mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans, a choice of cream of broccoli soup or a salad (I had the soup), and fresh homemade bread. Add really good coffee, and the whole thing was still under $10.
There was mellow piano music and friendly service, the food was just right--what's not to like?
When you are in Goliad, check it out.
Better yet, plan a day trip to Goliad, have lunch and see the missions.

ReplyDeleteOk, let's try again. The pun in my original comment was so bad I had to delete it. I did my own photographing of trees yesterday. Old country roads in Texas bring a certain peace, don't they?
ReplyDeleteI'm saving the email...don't EVEN think you're off the hook!
ReplyDeleteYour trees are fabulous!
My husband and I took in a tour of the Goliad mission during the Christmas break. Before heading to the local Whataburger for lunch, we took a spin around the square. Am I GLAD we did. The Hanging Tree Restaurant is probably one of the best places I have been in quite a while. The food was superb; the staff was friendly and the atmosphere was cozy...yes even with the animal heads on the wall. My husband is a chicken fried steak addict and is pretty hard to please. He absolutely loved the chicken fried ribeye. I had the seafood plate...very generous....and it was wonderful. Great sides. We would not hesitate to make the quick drive from Victoria any day to eat there again. And did I mention the coffee? Would make Juan Valdez envious.
ReplyDeleteOn a recent trip to the Hanging Tree Restaurant I was very disappointed with the service we received. This was my third time going there, my fist 2 visits were fine. It was a Sunday afternoon and we decided to drive up to Goliad to have lunch...BIG MOSTAKE.... our waitress was soooo rude. We did not get out basket of bread until everyone had finished their food(even though we had asked out waitress repeatedly for it).We had a HARD time getting her to come and refill our drinks, she kept making smart remarks The food was good ,but service was terrible. I had been bragging to all of my family and friends about this place, but now I am not so sure I will recommend it to anyone. The food and atmosphere are great but the service we received was horrible.
ReplyDeleteMarket Days December 2012-busy day in Goliad. My friend and I stopped in the The Hanging Tree where we've both eaten before. Service? There was none. Waitress was so rude we both wanted to get up and walk out and we should have. Food was cold and not very good. It wasn't the same as the last time I'd eaten there. Management was just as rude as the waitress. Needless to say, she didn't get a tip and we're not going back.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear the place has gone downhill.
ReplyDeletemy husband and I went to eat there and the service was terrible they were out of almost every thing we wanted to order. we ordered a appetizer and never got it and the salads never came and we never got any refills on our drinks. I was very unhappy with the service there. so disappointed because we like to eat there a lot and have been treated good until this one night don't think we will be going there any more.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I receive a negative comment on this, I go back there to see. Every time, the food and service have bee just as good as the first time. I'm beginning to think some competing restaurant is sending people here in an attempt to damage this business.
ReplyDeleteWhat competition?
DeleteI don't know. There is a restaurant across the square, but I haven't tried it yet. Maybe somebody has a hate on for the owner...
