Spoiled!

I wandered out into the garage last night, and got to thinking how good we have it.

When I was a kid, the average winter temperature of my bedroom was about what the garage temp was, in last night's ice storm.

We relied on space heaters, run on kerosene. You can't (and we didn't) leave something like that burning all night. We warmed our beds with hot water bottles, and heavy piles of wool blankets. I had one pillow. The mattress was so old that I could feel each and every spring.

So, instead of bemoaning the current lack of a heated waterbed, I should be grateful for a pillow-top mattress, two pillows, and a down quilt. Did I forget central heat?

Not to mention microfleece pajamas. So soft and warm compared with the viyella I slept in as a child.

Life is sweet!

  1. I sympathize, at least on a smaller scale! When we lived in that single-wide up in the hill country, the central heat/AC died before we moved in with Mom. We made do with space heaters, blankets, and the dogs deciding to sleep on the beds. Towards the end, the electric circuits were dying, so no heaters. I may be of the generation of central heat, but I am immensely grateful for it. We are so fortunate!

    Oh, and beautiful grandbaby! Congratulations!
