Let me start by saying, I am not a Christian. I was christened and confirmed, but I'm not a believer. I don't believe that there is a god who watches my every move, protects me, or demands obedience and money from me.
I am, however, something of a traditionalist. I don't think atheism is any excuse for being unfamiliar with the Bible.
So much of our culture is based on the Bible that to be ignorant of it is to be...well...ignorant. How do you know what "the patience of Job" is, if you know nothing of Job? You can't understand the adjective "antedeluvian" if you don't know about Noah and the flood.
And Christmas is Christmas, for heaven's sake! If you're more comfortable with "winter holiday," then have a happy one. I'll be wishing people a Merry Christmas, as I have all my life.
I'm sorry, people, but "separation of church and state" does not mean that we cease to acknowledge the party that has been going on for over 2000 years. OK, the party has been going on longer than that--Solstice, etc., but we've been calling it Christmas for a very long time.
The pendulum has swung before, from orgy to no celebration at all, back to over-the-top partying, more than once during the long history of Christmas.
From the way this town looks this year, a person would think that Oliver Cromwell had been reincarnated and was running Round Rock. Oh, we have our usual wreaths around the streetlights downtown, and there are trees in the library and in the water department office, but there are no outside decorations on City buildings, and even the front door of First Baptist Church is strangely missing its usual wreath and garland.
Did the Grinch come through when I wasn't looking?
You said it best, Ronni. Pesonally, I do all the Christmas stuff for my GS.
ReplyDeletePity, no matter what the occasion, it costs an arm and a leg. I have definitely underestimated the cost this year. I'm already stretched and we haven't even made the trip yet. Then we still have to get back.
It's times like these when a husband and his salary would come in handy.
Whatever you do, I hope it is a good one!
That was me - sorry!
ReplyDeleteWill try to remember to remind my daughter to take some pictures this Christmans.
ReplyDeleteDepending on how they come out, I could send some of family and friends, if you are interested, Ronni?
We are rather a mish-mash.
I would love that, Mgt!
ReplyDeleteIn case I don't get to you tomorrow, Ronni.
ReplyDeleteWishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas.
Enjoy!
You, too, Mgt!
