Out Youth Prom

Last night, Husband and I volunteered as chaperones at the Out Youth Prom. The Out Youth Prom is an alternative prom, held for kids who might not feel welcome at a traditional prom, for whatever reason. It is aimed mostly at gay youth, but everyone is welcome. There were goth kids there, whose dress style is frowned on at school proms. There were homeschooled kids who have no access to a traditional prom. The theme of this year's prom was something to do with Star Treatment, and some of us were stationed out front to snap pics and pay compliments. Not difficult, as the kids looked wonderful.

There were a lot of kids. Over a hundred for sure.

Entertainment was provided by the United Court of Austin and a couple of really good belly dancers. The performers all chose music that carried a positive message to the kids. Songs of strength, independence, friendship and beauty were sung out loud and clear, in words to inspire confidence. In the fringed dress, Saffire performed "River Deep and Mountain High," and in the pink dress, "Beautiful."

Saffire Trinity should have got a prize for the Best Fringe Work, and the Tallest Wig!

  1. Last night was absolutely beautiful, and we couldn't have asked for a nicer, more friendly and polite group of kids. I'm so glad you and the Mr. were there! It was wonderful to see you! And Saffire is far too gorgeous for her own good. Cinderella, eat your heart out!

  3. Actually, it has been going on here for quite a long time. More than 10 years anyway. This is the first year I had heard of it.

We throw away a lot of these kids because we want them to be like some notion we have of what they should be. I really enjoyed celebrating with them as they actually are.
