More About High School

Just so you don't have to scroll back, I went to a very small high school. There were 42 kids in my class, and the school offered a much more bare-bones curriculum than what most of you enjoyed.

Oh, and I graduated in nineteen-sixty-mumble.

We had a whole hour for lunch, and the entire school went at the same time. Can you imagine? Not only that, but we were allowed to leave campus. The cafeteria didn't have much to offer, as most kids brought their own lunch. The only this I ever remember buying in the lunch line was a hot dog, which, for thirty-five cents, was a deal, even for then. It came with optional grilled onions, and, to this day, that's my preferred way to have a hot dog!

But, there was a bakery across town. It was well over a mile away, because we had to hustle to get there (on foot) and back in our designated hour, but it was worth the trip. They had Scotch Oat Cakes. Two kinds, one plain and one with great huge bubbles of baked cheddar cheese. It made the whole day a bit better, if we could go to the bakery. Of course, we couldn't go every day, due to weather.

But, I've got several recipes for Scotch Oat Cakes, and have tried them all, tweaking them here and there, to try and duplicate the ambrosia, but I haven't succeeded so far.

Someday, I will.

  1. Good morning Ronni

I love to read the stories from your childhood. We are obviously around the same age.

My best memories of break time at school, was in Australia. We used to walk down the banks of the Sydney Harbour Bridge to a tiny little Cafe, where they sold little bowls of ice cream. We could choose a topping and mine was always a malt topping.

The closest I have come to finding that flavour, is Horlicks (Geez, what a name for a product!) Maybe I should ask at a Health Shop.

Now, I just love potato scones...a real Scottish favourite. I stick them in the toaster and eat them with melted butter. Real healthy! LOL

  2. I have to try those. I have a mix, but haven't tried to make them yet.

  3. You will really enjoy them, Ronni.

I'm lazy, Ronni. I buy mine at the store. They are piled as high as the loaves of bread. Very popular.

Our sense of taste seems to be quite similar. I like the licorice gums, better than any other licorice I have tasted.

My Mom used to make potato scones, but I would never eat them. Now, I'm sorry.

My grandson eats them as a snack, too. His favourite are the crumpets, though.

I think you need a hotplate or cast iron frying pan, to make the potato scones. If your recipe works, please send it on to me.

    Cheers

I have several cast iron frying pans. One is kept exclusively for corn bread.

I can probably make crumpets in it without compromising it, though. I just don't know how.

My potato scones are a mix, not a recipe. Bought in a bag, to be mixed with liquid ingredients and cooked. I still haven't tried it, but, maybe later this week.
