The New on Susan Powell

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/34508240/

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/34686705/ns/today-today_people/

It seems that, as there is nothing being released by the police regarding this investigation, people's opinions about the Powells' relationship have become the news. That, and the so called "internet blitz," which is also based on one friend's opinion that Susan, like a piece of interstate contraband, has been removed from Utah, and is alive and well and under wraps "somewhere else." This friend seems to base this on extreme denial (she probably thinks Josh is cute, in a "sad puppy" sort of way).

So, the media blitz, advertised all weekend, started this morning, and there are two Facebook groups crowing over the number of new members they have got since its inception. Did I mention that the two Facebook groups have been arguing copyright issues over a poster of Susan?

~sigh~

In my opinion, the police appear to have been totally blindsided by this case. Of course, we have no idea what they have discovered that they are not releasing, and maybe appearing to be the Keystone Kops is part of a larger strategy. They have named Josh Powell as a Person of Interest in the case, but could still not prevent his leaving for Washington State, ostensibly for the holidays. Now we hear he has no plans to return to Utah. His friends and family members were seen carrying things out of the house in West Valley. I guess he's just going to walk away from the rest of it. Police have not let us know if results are back from testing of the wet spot on the carpet, but I'm sure that, if luminol had revealed blood, he would be more than a Person of Interest. Still, it seems as if Josh's actions in renting a car the day his wife's disappearance was discovered took police totally by surprise. He managed to put several hundred miles on a GPS-free rental car, with nobody the wiser until after the fact.

So. The Facebook fans collect group members and hand out purple ribbons, and the police tell us nothing, and Josh hides out at his father's home in a gated community, nobody appears to be actually, physically searching for Susan (alive or dead).

Who is going to answer to those little boys?

  1. Isn't this called "guilty knowledge"? At least can be seen as such? I can see getting away from the locals might be understandable for a time, but aren't you supposed to be hanging around manning the phone, waiting for a possible call? Unless you know there won't be one...

  2. Karen, that's my take exactly. Apparently, they can't haul a person in just because they're acting suspiciously after the fact.

  3. I'm sure they've already looked at the mileage on the rental, cut the number down by 50%, drawn a nice, big circle with their software on the map and have a few not-too-shabby ideas on where he'd likely dump her, given the possible distance. I'm thinking they're just going to wait for the white stuff to melt and a DB to work with. If they look sharp and put out the word to the hunters, birders, ATVers, etc. they might get lucky and have a frozen DB in good shape for autopsy. Washington State, a regular refuge for Suspects and POIs. Wonder if he has a passport? Wonder if Daddy has a boat? We ain't seen nuthin' yet, Ronni! Doesn't it make us weary, though, all these dead wives? All these POS men? No-fault divorce, Boy-os!

  4. Sometimes I get very weary...and sometimes just supremely pissed off! I can't see how we are raising so many assholes.

  5. I hope this investigation is like a swimming duck--calm on the surface but paddling like fury underneath.

  6. Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!

  7. Well, thank you very much, Anonymous! I've been at this for over 4 years now, and would like to think my skills have improved in that time...

  8. Whew, I'm glad to see I'm not alone in thinking the social networking blitz was just a bunch of hoo-ha.

I want to believe the cops are swimming ducks, I do, I do!

  9. The InSessions crowd seems to be thinking along the same lines. Sort of, "Well, I don't know what good it will do, but there's no harm in it..."

Maybe I just underestimate social networking, but I'm fairly certain she's not hiding out in somebody's computer.

Maybe he just did that to confuse the cops. IF he's guilty he may have dumped the body much further away. It's always good to go to a different county or state - that makes it harder for the cops.

  11. VoS, if he was that organized, he is a hell of an actor, because he comes across as dumb as a box of rocks.

  12. Could be though, although when I look at him I keep thinking he's gay not super smart since he has that Ted Haggard face thing going on.

  13. No one appears to dispute that he is the father of those two little boys, so, if he is gay, he makes exceptions. I think he's just a very controlling little man who couldn't stand it when his wife said she was leaving.

  14. I agree Ronni; I tend to think there is no big mystery as to WHO done it, only exactly how, and where he put her.

  15. I just hope it doesn't drag on as long as the Michelle Young case.

  16. The whole driving around for 100 miles could easily be explained by him saying he was upset about his wife. He needed a drive. He isnt as smart as Jason Young. His story is WAY too hinky.

  17. True. Unless her body is found somewhere inside that radius.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh, I think her body was gone way before he rented that car.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree. But he could well have gone to check that his middle-of-the night stash job would hold up in daylight.

Gay men CAN have sex with women and, IIRC, he's a Mormon and they pretty much have to fake it or get out.

  21. But Melissa, the 100 miles was on the family vehicle that same night (camping with the boys, you know- in 10 degree weather, at 1am, little fire and s'mores thing going on...)- BUT he's not supposed to know yet that she's even gone! So he's NOT upset she's gone; he doesn't know that yet! Right?!? Yeah, it's a problem...

Now, the GPS-less rental he got while the lab was going through the above vehicle, that one he managed to put hundreds of miles on! And the po-po didn't know this til they got a gander at mileage after the fact. Yo-yo po-pos. Anyone wanna lay bets as to what he might have been up to? He sure wasn't manning the phone at home, waiting for that call, handing out fliers or volunteering a poly....

  22. Karen, how could they possibly verify the mileage on his family car?

The rental? Sure, of course. They have no way of knowing what the milage was on the family car before that night though.

How do they know he didn't disconnect the speedometer on the rental?

  24. I wonder if he asked, when he rented the car, if it had GPS? I know from the last time we rented a car when the stupid Mini was broken, about half of the rental cars at the local Enterprise had GPS although the clerk told me eventually all will.

That whole conversation came up, BTW, because there was an IMPD cop there taking a report on a rental that had been rented several months previously, and the renter had never brought it back, although he had spiffed it up with new wheels, a bass, etc. Enterprise had tracked it until the dude figured out how to dismantle the GPS.

    Heh, I love Indy.

  25. He had told them he went to that particular location (the park where they "camped"), and that was apparently confirmed by the older son. That is, I think, 92 miles away. But he couldn't find exactly where they had stopped there when he was interviewed by the cops, claiming the fresh snow made it hard to figure out where this was. Come to think of it though, the boy is only four- my kid would've been asleep after 5 minutes in the car at night....

  26. Honestly, I don't think he'd be able to work out disconnecting/reconnecting the mileage gauge on the rental. If it were easy, they'd all be doing it! And I know for a fact (I used to work the Avis system for a huge travel agency), these companies have ways of keeping track of duplicitous clients! The stuff they tried to get away with at Avis in Co. 4 years ago will show up on a record that comes up in VA. this year.

If he asked specifically for a GPS-less rental (and they're all upgrading their fleets in that direction ASAP) again, its "guilty knowledge", especially if he's known to go camping, etc.

Box of rocks is right, Ronni!

I met people in Alaska who claimed that the government was tracking everyone with the metallic threads in paper money! Some people hate to be tracked so GPS free isn't always guilty (although it may be crazy).

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, I'd say taking a trip of several hundred miles all over Utah and wherever in the Rest of the West and NOT getting the GPS if offered (surely it was if available)would be the height of folly.

I can well believe that about Alaskans! I can believe just about anything about Alaskans.

'Night, Ronni- I've got an event to get ready for this weekend. Will try to catch up when back in town.

  29. Oh, but one last thing, we'll just have to sit tight and see what the good lab folks have to say about the big, wet spot on the floor- the one with the fans blowing on it. How considerate those kidnappers were (remember, she didn't have a vehicle that day- 1 van for them!), getting the rug all nice and dry....

    ReplyDelete
  30. You guys are killing me! I am too tired to laugh this hard...Karen, good luck with your event...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I will concede that a camper modern enough to use a van would probably appreciate the advantages to GPS in the snow-covered wastes of Utah!

The police have not said if the van was lined with tin foil...

  32. Yeah, I just watched that Conspiracay Theory about the Big Brother chips and what not. If you are only a tiny bit paranoid and prone for suggestion, ole Jesse will push you right over the edge.

You know, my dentist looked fairly furtive.....

  35. Hi, Lisa, and All-
Anything that keeps Jesse V. busy and out of politics (where he could actually do damage) is fine with me! Waiting for the inevitable Bermuda Triangle episode with bated breath! Hah!

    Must bead, must bead...
