A Couple of My Favourite Costumes

I built these for a production of "Charley's Aunt" at Sam Bass Theater a few years ago. I still think they are some of the prettiest things I've done. Lynn Beaver, the director, built the hats. She required the girls to wear boned corsets (built by Kaye), to give them the proper posture and the clothes the proper fit.

  1. Pretty in pink!

I don't know if this is apocryphal or not, but when Florenz Ziegfeld was criticized for extravagance by putting expensive French lace on his showgirls' petticoats--which no one in the audience would see, he said words to the effect of, "They know they're wearing expensive French lace petticoats, and that makes the difference."

  2. I always used to try to get actresses to wear period lingerie. Eventually, I gave up. I did get some to draw lines down the back of their legs with eyebrow pencil, and spray it with hairspray, before they put on their pantyhose, though.

Sometimes it helps to know some history, too. I always try and explain flappers to women wearing 20s clothes. They have to realize that flappers

    a) were the cutting edge of their day, equivalent to the Goth styles of today, and

    b) had just come out from under tons of corsets and petticoats, and other restrictions, like long hair.

    c) just got the vote and had a new independence that their mothers never dreamed of.
