Another Country Song

This one sort of ticks me off.

The protag has been with a woman in labour for eighteen hours, and he has to take a break.

Let's run that by again.

HE has to TAKE A BREAK!

SHE has been in labour for eighteen hours, and HE has to take a break? Come here, George, and let me slap you!

I Saw God Today
(George Strait)

I just walked down the street to the coffee shop
had to take a break
I'd been by her side for eighteen hours straight
I saw a flower growing in the middle of the sidewalk
pushing up through the concrete
like it was planted right there for me to see
the flashin' lights, the honkin' horns
all seemed to fade away
in the shadow of that hospital at 5:08
I saw God today

Chorus:
I've been to church
I've read the book
I know He's here, but I don't look
near as often as I should
Yeah, I know I should
His fingerprints are everywhere
I'd just slow down to stop and stare
opened my eyes and man I swear
I saw God today

I saw a couple walking by they were holding hands
Man, she had that glow
yeah I couldn't help but notice she was starting to show
I stood there for a minute takin' in the sky
lost in that sunset
a splash of amber melted in the shades of red

Chorus

I got my face pressed up against the nursery glass
She's sleeping like a rock
My name on her wrist wearing tiny pink socks
She's got my nose, she's got her mama's eyes
My brand new baby girl
She's a miracle
I saw God today

So, while the new mom lies alone in her room, he's out eyeballing other pregnant women and drinking coffee, admiring flowers and the sunset, and seeing God.

Double you tee eff?? And this makes him some sort of good guy?

I'd like to see HIM do nine months of pregnancy and eighteen hours of labour and THEN see how much he feels like gadding around in the flowery sunset!

  1. Actually, it all depends on how you are interpreting the lyrics. It just says that he had been there for eighteen hours, but does not say that the woman was still in labor. Eighteen house could very well have included labor, delivery, and getting her to a room where she is now resting comfortably. Especially since he actually mentions looking through the glass at his daughter. Just my (slightly more positive) take on the lyrics.

  2. That was how I read the lyrics too, I think. It's all done and over, Mom and baby are snoozing, and Dad's in a fog. Maybe New Mom went "Gah! Go look at flowers! Let me -sleep-!" Maybe? I dunno...I don't know what giving birth is like either. I -do- know whatever the new mother says, though, is Law. Must Be Done. That's all I know. :)

  3. Aha! But he GOES BACK and looks at his daughter. No mention of the baby AT ALL until the last verse of the song.

Maybe she did run him off, as Lisa F. suggests, but I STILL want to kick his butt!

  4. LOL, I think you are looking into it wrong too. But your version of it makes me laugh.

I agree, that he saw the baby sleeping through the glass and his wife wanted him to let her rest, so she sent him off.

From what I have read George Strait is an awesome guy. Though I must admit his belt buckles make me laugh.

Also, he didnt write the song. Rodney Clawson did. It might have hit a cord with Strait since his firstborn daughter died when she was 13.

  5. I like the lyrics--I think its very sweet. Tough guy melting at the sight of his daughter.

And when he sees the other couple, he realizes that he is not the only man who experienced such a miraculous event.

Come on Ronni--give this another read through. :)
