I Found a Ground Maze!

A couple of years ago, I did an entry on paths like this. When we were in England in 1989, we found one that was about half a mile long, and took maybe 15 minutes to walk. I loved it.

These were very popular during Medieval times, and there is a lovely one built into the floor of Chartres Cathedral, in France.

For me, this is where Christianity, Paganism and Eastern religions come together. There is something very centering and meditative about walking a maze, even one as simple as this. It reminds me that, no matter how much of a pattern we see to our lives, there are always switchbacks and unexpected changes of direction, and the spiral of life is never that simple, either inward or outward.

I found this in a little garden on the south side of First United Methodist Church.

  2. Thanks, Terri.

There's a whole philosophy behind them. If you google Chartres Cathedral, they have a page for theirs, and it has a lot of information about them.

  3. There's another of these over here in Cedar Park, too! It's at Live Oak Unitarian Church, or at least on their grounds. I went out to walk it one night after tai chi. Stiff, warm breeze, full moon, wind chimes singing up high in the trees. Just remembering that brings calm. :)
