In North America, the day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The mid-nineteenth century Valentine's Day trade was a harbinger of further commercialized holidays in the United States to follow. The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.
Jim and I were never very big on Valentine's Day, or other "Hallmark Holidays." We would usually get each other a card. Last year, he bought me a huge red heart pillow, and I got him a book.
We tended to give each other prezzies throughout the year, mostly on a whim.
I am depressed that Valentines are a thing of the past for me. Eventually, I suppose, I will get over it, the same way I got over being sad the last time I nursed a baby. Life moves on. I guess this is why widows were traditionally given a year to emerge from grief--each holiday brings its own sadness and it's own brand of "nevermore."
In six days, it will have been six months since Jim killed himself. I am tired of crying, there are new lines around my face, and permanent bags under my eyes from all this sadness. I am sick of sadness. I am sick of crying. I am sick.
My heart breaks for you, Ronni. Personally, I never found anyone to love the way you love/loved Jim. In a sad way I'm rather relieved.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you buy yourself something from Jim? Something you know he would have chosen.
Sorry, that sounds corny and stupid, doesn't it? Not to mention insensitive.
ReplyDeleteActually, it doesn't. I tried it, though I bought what I would have liked him to get me, not what he actually would have.
ReplyDeleteIt's hollow.
I understand how you feel about not finding the love of your life.
ReplyDeleteIt is bittersweet, to say the least.
Ronnie,I'm not big on the day either,I have my reasons for hating this day. It's too commercial anyway.
ReplyDeleteBUT,a piece of my heart goes out to you.
On a lighter note,as far as your "new" lines go I can send you some really good face putty to fill them in! lol
you just have to remember not to smile too big or it will crack!
I use it all the time! lol
I hope I'm not sounding insensitive, you said you were sick of being sad..I was hoping to make you smile..
and if you don't smile..I'm going to send you an email picture of me sucking my big toe! lol
P.S.
(please tell me you cracked a smile on that one so I don't have to do that! lol)
While I am tired of being sad, I don't think your big toe is going to cheer me up. Nothing but time and distraction will do that.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe a monkey's paw.
Ronni, I don't know if you ever watch HGTV, but on this Valentine's Day, they are repeating House Hunters in Round Rock, Texas.
ReplyDeleteThought you might want to tune in.
Sorry for the OT post!
Jo Ann
There is no such thing as "off topic" around here.
ReplyDeleteI do not have a focus, such as a crime to follow, or a political philosophy. This is a personal blog, and, as such, is wide open.
Now, I have been known to delete the odd religious rant, usually from anonymous people who think finding Jesus would help me feel better about losing Jim.
Maybe I can grab the remote in a bit, here, and see what's on. I probably missed it, but it would be interesting.
ReplyDeleteAs long as there is a game on, I'm toast. Brendan, you know, is depressed. It's Valentine's Day, and he is "single." I made him feel worse by telling him I knew all about that, and didn't want to hear it.
I'm sorry Ronnie...
ReplyDeleteI hate that your sad...I do know the feeling..a little too much this past couple of years.I want to make you smile but I'm fresh out of monkey paws...will a (((((HUG))))) do?
Hugs are nice.
ReplyDeleteYou do know the Monkey's Paw story, don't you?
Actually Ronnie, I have to say that if I did I've forgotten it. My mind now a days must b prompted to remember stuff,I think It might be the stress of the last year.My sister pointed it out to me just the other day..It scared her I guess because I usually have a uncanny ability to remember things!
ReplyDeleteI read everyday, and have for years.
I guess you can't retain everything! lol
now you've got me curious...So do tell me about the mokey paw..

ReplyDeleteHere's the story.
I read the Monkey's Paw story.
ReplyDeleteI read something "similar" a long ime ago..I wouldn't want a monkey's paw, that's for sure...I have enough problems! lol
Thanks for the link!
