When Jim and I were in Michigan, about a year before he killed himself, our friends Lisa and Martin took us to Meijer's, a huge store. We don't have anything quite like it here, though the HEB Plus is trying. It looked as if it had started out as a food store, and expanded into general merchandise, rather than the reverse, like Walmart. They have really cool food, too. Off the wall stuff that grocery stores here don't carry. I bought these lovely lime green washcloths. The colour made me smile, the texture was great and the price was right.
I came across one of them this morning...I had been working my way down the pile, and it had been in the linen closet for several months. It still smelled like Meijer's! It has been washed many times in the past year, and dried with fabric softener. It has been loaded with Ivory soap, Brendan's "Dial for Men" (heh), and my Dr Bronner's lavender. Still, after it sits in the linen closet, it starts to smell like the store it came from.
Such a nice reminder of Lisa and Martin and that wonderful trip; the last adventure Jim and I took.
It was kind of a magic trip. Lisa invited any and all available Misfits to join her for her 40th birthday at the end of July, 2006. I really wanted to go, but we couldn't afford the trip. A Misfit who would be unable to attend gave me her Frequent Flier Miles, and Lisa said we could stay with her.
I asked Jim, "How would you like to go to Michigan for Lisa's birthday?"
Bear in mind that we had never actually met Lisa and Martin in person. Lisa and I had become friends at Loretta's blog, Observations of a Misfit, which was THE place to be during the Laci Peterson case. We all read and commented on each others' blogs: The Lisa Life andOne If By Land, Two If By Sea and felt as if we really did know each other.
Jim felt we couldn't spend anything on such a trip until some financial matters were resolved on the home front, and he thought that was the end of it.
But it wasn't. I scrimped and saved every penny I could. I did some side work, sewing and cleaning. The plane reservations were made--I was going to make sure they didn't go to waste. The day we were to leave, I placed the receipts for the paid-off accounts on his desk.
That impressed him!
Then I told him he should pack his bag, because we were going to Michigan.
He said, "OK..." and sat down to play solitaire on the computer.
I hauled out a weekend bag and started loading clothes and toothbrushes.
Jim said, "When are we supposed to go?"
"In about three hours," was my answer.
That got him going. I had everything taken care of. Tickets, parking...I had set it all up. All he had to do was show up.
I had never done anything like that before. He was Chief Executive In Charge of Planning Trips.
Martin was there at the Detroit airport to get us, and we had a wonderful time. Lisa's party was fantastic, and Martin's parents were like a little bit of home, for me. Lisa and Martin's little girl was a joy, and they took us all over their "neck of the woods," including a side trip to Hell.
Misfits gathered from as far away as California, and more called during the party. Lisa's family and friends made us feel so welcome!
It was our last Great Adventure, and it all comes back to me every time I smell those washcloths.
It's the little things.
Ronni, My heart has ached for you ever since I read about the tradgedy.
ReplyDeleteI wanted you to know that.
Also I would have LOVED to have seen Jesus Christ Superstar.
Thanks for sharing the great pics!!
What a wonderful memory Ronni!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean by "it's the little things"....
And it's those things that are the most precious!
BTW..take a peek at my newest happening.. I tell you I just can't win!
Thanks, r2z2...
ReplyDeleteI'm going on Sunday, I think. Brendan's show is next weekend, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so Sunday will be my first chance.
Terri, I'll be over shortly. Put the kettle on for tea!
It was a wonderful time. I just wish we could have stayed longer.
ReplyDeleteMe, too! I'm so glad I put the pictures up in that gallery! That was just before my computer died.
ReplyDeleteThat really warmed my heart, Ronni. I loved reading about that trip and all the misfits that attended.
ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly, Countrygal was a surprise visitor...arrived with Loretta, or something like that.
I didn't realise you scrimped and sacrificed so much to make the trip. You go-getter, you!
Even so, I couldn't have gone without Peggy's and Lisa's help!
ReplyDeleteBrendan was so envious, when he found out a basketball coach was there, and Jim and Joe had such a good time.
That was my best birthday, ever!
ReplyDeleteWe had so much fun with you and Jim staying at the house.
Smells like Meijer's. Heh.
Funny thing. I am in the land of Meijer and, while we were in Texas, I fell in love with HEB and its cooking demos. I guess you always like the things you cannot have. When we first moved here in 1982, I was stunned (WI girl) at how big Meijer was and how they had everything.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for thinking of me today. It means more than you know. If you ever want to visit there is a Meijer at the end of my street.
Ronni, I am so glad you had that trip and that you made it happen. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteIt's me at the door!
ReplyDeleteHey Ronni, it's a beautiful story. Always remember that, you had a great love. I am such a smell oriented person, smell's can bring up powerful memories for me. Go ahead and remember those good times, it's part of your life together.
ReplyDeleteWell, my computer was being slow, so I guess I got impatient and posted twice...sorry
ReplyDeleteI deleted one. Thanks for your kind words..
ReplyDeleteRonni, other than the weekends, do you ever get a day off?
ReplyDeleteI think a day roaming the streets and taking pretty pictures will do you good. What do you say?
I know, I'm being a bit selfish with this suggestion.
Hopefully I will get out this weekend. I'm usually off Sunday and Monday, but had to work this past Monday.
ReplyDeleteSpring is budding out the trees here, and on Monday we broke a temp record set in 1918. It was 92° F here!
Today, when I got up, it was below freezing.
That's Texas for ya! LOL!
Good grief! How does your body get used to those swings in temperature?
ReplyDeleteI'd be stricken with all sorts of maladies.
No point in putting your summer clothes away, then. LOL
I keep a light jacket in the car at all times. You just never know when you will need another layer.

Well, moi must comment that wash cloths play a large part in moi's memory early in life. As a child I played that they were fish, swishing around and around the tub, feeling real eely not scrubbedey-dubb. I have known a person who would never dry off with a towel, only with a wash-cloth. Cliff Hubbard a deceased rip, a reporter at the Norfolk Va gnus-paper of which I cannot remember that name. x-sapes this is rediculous. I rilly love washclothes nomatter what color-our they are. it is the swishy-squishy factor and the iron-plate visual of those swishing fishy wash cloth-as which got moi through all the baths. Wash cloths and floating ivory soap, which was all we ever used. This was also including Ipana (urp) toothpaste. Brushhah-ditto-ditto with the new Ipana, b-d-d-d it's so good for yout teeee-eeeeth. Pictures manana.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Ronni. I am finding this week to be never-ending.
ReplyDeleteProbably because I'm not sleeping well and having to drag myself out of bed to face the day. Oh well!
Hope things are getting sorted out for you. Have you done any more decorating in the house?
Actually, the Moses one was a double-bluff, so I'm not surprised we missed that.
ReplyDeleteYou are brilliant, though. Wow!
I just landed here through one link or another but I wanted to say...THAT was a wonderful post!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much, phx!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your kind words.
