"The Colored Museum"

Two kids came into the shop yesterday, looking for a set of camo fatigues for one of them, and a "drag" outfit for the other. For a play at the high school. Round Rock High School. The same one Brendan attends.

That was not computing so very well, so I asked who directed it, and when the performances were. Turns out that it's a Senior Production Class show, directed by Charles Hobby.

The show is a series of monologues and scenes, illustrating facets of life in Black America. The scenes are called "exhibits," in keeping with the "museum" theme. From "Get on Board," in which a flight attendant describes how to fasten your shackles to "The Gospel According to Miss ROJ," the drag bit, "Soldier with a Secret," the soldier bit, "The Hairpiece", in which an "afro" wig argues with one with more "anglo"-looking tresses, all the way through to "The Party," you are going to love this. It is beautifully written, and wonderfully brought to life by a rocking ensemble.

It's brilliant.

It's not for the little ones, and there is some "mature" subject matter (the drag queen, among others) and some language. The piece pushes the envelope a bit, for high school.

A few standouts are Katherine Tolbert in several roles, Marcus Jackson as Miss ROJ, and Cameron McKnight as the soldier. Both the boys have several roles; all very good.

Tomorrow night, Ford Theater, Round Rock High School, 8:30, no charge.

As we used to say, "Be there, or be square."

  2. That sounds like it will be really good. Nik's school cancelled all plays this year and we're sick about it. It is good to see the arts alive and well somewhere.

  3. Maybe not for long. They are tearing down the building that houses the theater, and the new building doesn't have one.

They never did have a real theater--just a converted library.

Is there a community theater in your area that has a kids' program, or ever does shows with kids in them? We have several. I see the same kids at Sam Bass, at the Palace, at Way Off Broadway--everywhere.

  4. Such a pity that the kids are not taken into consideration. Theatre is such a wonderful confidence builder.

I wish Scottish Schools invested in creative arts. A great way to keep kids off the streets.

Hope you are having a good day...I'm so glad it's Friday.

  5. Mgt, there was precious little in that way at the school I went to in Canada. There used to be a choir, and a music class (in which we were taught to play a scale on the recorder), but the music teacher quit to get married when I was in 8th grade, so that was the end of that. There was no theater, period. A talent show at Christmas, with a Nativity, but that was strictly extra-curricular. One year, I had to take Art by correspondence because not enough kids signed up to make the class.

    I was 34 when I discovered theater.

  6. Ronni,Over the past ten years or so the arts have been slowly taken out of our schools here..its a terrible thing! I remember when I went from 8th grade to high school, our music, art,an home ec teachers all came to the high school with our class!lol I loved those classes AND those teachers...what a awful thing that the school systems don't think it's as important anymore..a shame and a waste. I'm kinda gald I didn't have any children of my own, kids these days miss out on so much UNLESS of course you an AFFORD to have them taught privately!and most of us can't do that..it's so costly here in CT..I miss the "old" days.
