Jim's Miata/My Miata

I actually went to bed before midnight last night. And woke up dreaming of Jim. He was looking under the hood of the Miata. I wonder if this means I should take it in for a tuneup or something.

Jim rarely looked under the hood of the Miata, except to refill the washer fluid. That needs doing, as well.

~sigh~

When we were on our trip in the Summer of 2003, we left a light on in the motor home, and had to give it a jump the next day. Yes, Virginia, you can jump a motor home from a Miata. Once you find the battery, that is. It took a while. It's in the trunk. We had to actually look in the owners' manual--what a concept!

He loved that car. I drove it on that trip. We couldn't flat-tow it because it has rear wheel drive. Couldn't tow a trailer--the combined weight was too much for our little old motor home. Couldn't use a dolly--had to back it onto it and that left the front end practically on the road.

So that's the year I really learned to drive, and I did it in the Miata.

He's telling me to take it in, I know he is.

  1. Did Jim take the car in for a check-up on a regular basis? Maybe it was around this time of year...

There is nothing worse than breaking-down. This never happened to me when I had a man at hand.

The last few years, I've had a couple. Clutch cable broke, exhaust fell off and buckled under the chassis. Both things are not negotiable as far as moving the car. Sheesh!

  2. What's a clutch cable (she said, twisting her blonde hair around her finger)?

  3. Oh, right! Americans drive automatic cars, don't they. It is a foot pedal that allows you to change gears. LOL

The cable attaches it to the gear-box. I think that might be your trasmission.

  4. Have a good weekend, Ronni. I will check in on Monday, if I can see.

    Ciao!

  5. Vanessa can drive a standard, but I have never learned.

    Have a good weekend, Mgt!

  6. Ronni, as I mentioned before, I had a flashy little red Miata for about two years. Loved driving it - not an automatic.
Since only two people can ride in them, it became a problem so I traded it.
I would check all of the fluids, especially the transmission, oil, brake fluid, radiator and power steering. The window washer solution is not vital.
Do you see any obvious leaks?

I always drove sticks until I got older and had long commutes. The best driving experience there is.
One time I was test driving a Triumph and the salesman was going into detail about shifting, etc. I nodded and took him for the ride of his life. I can still recall the smile on my face at his re-action. I am a life-long car lover.

Have a good weekend and break a leg!

  7. They check all that stuff when I take it in for an oil change, and not due for another till the beginning of March.

My brothers (birth family) drove Triumphs in rallies in England. My brother Derek took me for a ride in his, down all the English country lanes very late at night.

The ride of my life. Absolutely!

  8. Hi Ronni:

I just looked at the time and thought of you -- thinking you're on stage emoting your little heart out.

I hope opening night was everything you dreamed it would be -- and then some :)

  9. oops!

Methinks my time-zone adjustment may need some adjusting:) Darn 1/2 hour time zones!

Now I'm curious -- what time did it start?

  11. Call was at 7:00 PM, curtain at 8.

Moi, I will take the Miata in on Monday. I know it's either Jim telling me something, or me telling me something, using Jim's voice.

  12. My late husband was not a huge do-it-yourselfer (though he did once build a beautiful, good running Harley from several boxes of parts - after that he bought them in one piece!). But, he was a big believer in regular maintenance of vehicles, especially oil changes. Listen to the voice, Ronni. It might save you big time in the future.

  13. Yeah, either Jim is telling you something or maybe you are psychic and the dream was the way you foresaw this evening's conversation: remember how you and me and Michael started talking about car care and tire care after the opening tonight? I discovered a place called "Jerry's garage" in north-east Round Rock that works on mostly foreign cars and is very reasonably priced. I took my Nissan to the dealership for an estimate and they gave me a laundry list of things it needed. I usually trusted my dealership, but this was so expensive, over $2000. So I got this place to look at it, and they ran tests on it, and they said that some of the things that the dealership said were wrong were not messed up at all, and they showed me test results. Plus, they charged a whole lot less for parts and labor. My final price was about $600. They are pretty conservative there, but seemed to work on my car just as well as anyone else's, even though it still has a Kerry-Edwards bumper sticker....tracie

  14. Thanks, Tracie. Is that the place on 1460? If so, that's where Ramona takes her Metropolitan. Good to know.

  15. Martin has had two Miatas. His first one, before my time, he won a regional championship with. The second, I loved it! So much fun to drive. Talk about Zoom Zoom! When Mia came along, it just wasn't practical anymore.

I love driving standard. What I learned on, my dad insisted.

  16. Smart.

My dad never taught me to drive, so I was all grown up before I ever learned. I got my license for the first time at 45.

  17. Ronni, Heather had her oil changed, fluids checked, etc in December and just took it in and found out no oil showing on the dipstick and trannie fluid was very low. No leaks. Seems she paid for something she didn't receive and it could have cost her the engine.

I would take it somewhere you can watch them service it. We've had a few places here in California that have been caught doing this unfortunately.

  18. I've been taking it to the same place Jim and Addy always took all their vehicles. I hope it's still OK.

Maybe I should have Tracie's Jerry check it out. I'm off on Monday, so will see if I can take it in then.

  19. Jeez Ronni! 45? How did you get around? Do you live in a city?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I did--Vancouver, Toronto, Chicago, Austin...

In Round Rock, I owed a lot of people for schlepping me around, and then I got a bike. For several years, I rode to work and back on that. I was in pretty good shape.
