Whew!

In spite of there being another working day before Halloween, I think the most intense day of the year for us was Saturday. Friday was pretty wild, as well. You'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) at the number of people who leave their costume shopping till the last minute!

It's on our door, in our phone message, and in all our advertising that we close at 6:00 PM. Yet, people come in at 5:45 with no idea of what they want, and are still having us hem up things, and bring them more things to try on, at 7:00 PM.

Both Friday and yesterday we didn't roust the last customer until 7:15.

It's very inconsiderate of people to expect us to stay open late just for their convenience. It is also inconsiderate for teens to come in and take up hours of our time putting together outfits, and then say to put it aside for them while they go get Mommy to pay for it. Of course, Mommy is going to laugh her head off when Kid comes in and says, "They are holding an $85 costume for me at the shop. I need you to go and pay for it."

Technically, we don't reserve or hold a costume without it being paid for in full, but after we have spent hours fetching down wig after wig, taking in seams, turning up hems, until the kids look like Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, we're hoping Mommy will accede.

I actually went to a party last night, after working an extra two hours yesterday, and had a good time.

I went dressed as a Victorian widow, except that I had a wig with optical fiber lights blinking in it.

I have to think Jim would have got a chuckle out of that, if he is still hanging around anywhere to care.

  4. The only time I ever came first in a "fancy dress" competition was dressed as Marie Antoinette. My father's idea. My brother was dressed as the executioner. I was 9 years old and he was 11.

  5. I won a prize the very first time I dressed as a witch.

It was a very good witch, pulled from my own closet, back in 1970. I had the skinny figure and the long hair, and the rest was filmy black garments and makeup.

  7. Thank you, Nadine. I wore it in "Arsenic," and Brandon Harris wore it in "Charley's Aunt."

It's very comfortable, with its boned bodice. I wore my black Crocs, as they didn't show under that skirt.
