What's with First Baptist Church? They have eaten up several blocks of land around their church. Quite a few small houses got donated to Habitat for Humanity so that they could build big ugly brick buildings. The street between their newer church and their other church buildings got closed off, so that those who would like to drive from Round Rock Ave. to Austin Ave. have to go around the block. Neighbours across Austin Ave. have told me that the church keeps making them offers on their houses.
My route home from work takes me up Austin Ave. from Mays to Round Rock Ave. Yesterday was Wednesday, and there is always church on Wednesday evening, so I'm used to threading through traffic. STILL. This huge SUV stopped dead, right in front of me, when there are parking lots to the left and to the right, and the driver got out and started unloading bicycles! Right there in the middle of the street. Not a wave, an apology, a hazard light--nothing. People started walking across from the church building, without even looking for oncoming traffic (me), and stood right in my path around this behemoth, just chatting away. I didn't honk, but I did manage to catch the eye of one of them, and raised both hands in the air in a "When are you going to move?" gesture, and she gave me a bad look!
It's still a public street, people. Your thousand-seat church hasn't taken over the whole town yet!
This is just ignorant. Can't say much as I always behave badly when it comes to religious stuff.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, it doesn't surprise me. These fanatics are the root of many problems in your Country and mine.
So much for Christian charity, eh!!
ReplyDeleteThe think they own the street, because they own the land on both sides of it.
ReplyDeleteI sympathize, Vero.
ReplyDeleteThe SAME scenario in the small town where my daughter lives - in the Shenandoah Valley.
The church people buy the historic homes by any means they can. Use well-heeled parishoners at times and then deny why they are doing it. Sneaky and unethical. For parking lots, playgrounds, and the latest...for a battered women's shelter! Right across the street from D! Not near THEIR homes.
How long before the angry men show up and vent, many of them violent?
Good Christians? Not. Not even close.
Ohhhh, don't mess with the righteous, Ronni. Can't you see from their prime property ownership how much god loves them more than you?
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, don't mess with the righteous, Ronni. Can't you see from their prime property ownership how much god loves them more than you?
ReplyDeleteThat's when you just keep driving. They'll move. If not you've done a public service by running them down. But you already know how I feel about Baptists, those in particular. You've at least got to yell at them out the car window! And lay on the horn! Take the suburban next time, you could hit more of them, with less damage to your car.
