Getting Things Done

Today, we went to get copies of Addy's death certificate, because, not only do I have to prove Jim died, I must prove Addy died, as well. She is still listed as his beneficiary on his life insurance, and on his Teacher Retirement benefits. What am I...chopped liver?

And, of course, his legal advice benefit is through his insurance, so won't answer any insurance questions, because they are afraid it would be a conflict of interest, like I'm going to sue their insurance company, or something.

We have to pick up Jim's death certificates and "cremains" (I hate that word) at the funeral home tomorrow. That same funeral home that charged me over 2K to do what others will do for a third of that amount. Of course I went to them---they cremated Paul, Addy, and Luis. I should have waited and shopped around a bit, first.

They are vultures. This is another thing that it would be good to set up in advance, in fact, I think I will, with one of those cheaper companies.

My friends, both on and off the net, Jim's students' families, the staff at Cedar Valley, and people I don't even know have been very generous, so the electric bill is paid, Brendan's school supplies have been bought, and the bits of pipe and whatnot can be purchased for Mike to fix the kitchen sink and the main bathroom toilet.

Of course, the TV decided to go all crippled and funny around the edges, but we have hauled Brendan's out of his room, and it works. The big TV cost over two thousand in 2002, and I had expected more than five years out of it. Maybe it's just some little thing that can be fixed.

I have a motor home and a classic Oldsmobile to sell, as well as an upright freezer and a gas dryer.

I know, I know. Baby steps.

  1. For the things you need to sell try craigslist.com Be sure to explain your situation in slim detail of course. I have found that people argue less over the asking price if they know why you need the money. If you need help with posting things email me at danceluver06@hotmail.com I would be glad to help.

  3. I would advise consulting some motor-head man that you trust regarding the selling of the oldmobile. There is a lot of word of mouth in that circuit and don't be too hasty. One man's trash is another man's treasure. xxoo

  4. Put the classic car on eBay,not Craigslist. When we sold my MGB, we made over $1800 than what we paid for it. Martin had put some work into it to make it perfect, but I wish we had ten of them. When we sold my dad's dually pick-up, we made a whole lot as well. I've found CL to be good for smaller items but the high ticket ones, it's definately worth the fees and wait time to go with eBay.

  6. Hey, Ashley, if you can find me a cheap roofer, I'd love it! Something somebody could do fairly easily is replace a toilet and fix a shower drain.

Of course, I need to clean a path to either of those projects. I also need a person with a large trailer and a couple guys to clear out the back yard and make about $200 worth of trips to the dump.

  7. Good morning, Ronni.

Such wonderful tributes to Jim. I really didn't know what a fabulous person he was. No wonder you loved him so much.

I'm over the anger....now, my heart is just breaking for you.

Jim was love by so many.

  9. Glad to see that you are making progress with the practical aspects of this tragedy.

Jim left a legacy of students who admired him and a spouse who loved him. That's more than many.

Each town is different but I'll explain what happens here in the Northland. There are grants available for repairs(such as roofs). There are also low-cost loans that can be totally forgiven if a person stays in the home for 10 years. Some of the funds are federal so it might be worth checking.

It helps the homeowner and it helps the city's housing stock remain repaired.

  11. I talked to my neighbor
He can fix the drain and if you'll give him the money to pay the dump he'll load everything and take it out there,He can also do the work to replace the toilet, i don't know if you already have a new one lined up or what, but he can do the labor.
And i know no cheap roofers!! sorry
If you'll just tell me where you live and let me see when a good time is for both of you he can probably get it done
