I just saw a news story that has me grinding my teeth. Unfortunately, the news channel does not have this story on its website.
It has to do with those little stickers that are all over our fruit and veggies. Apparently, a child ingested one, and it took surgery to get rid of it. I missed the reason why the sticker didn't just wend its way through the child's digestive tract to its conclusion.
But, come on, people! Who in the world would give a child a piece of fruit without removing the sticker first? Are we thinking these things have some sort of nutritional value? That they are made of sugar and dissolve? That our kids will somehow know through osmosis not to eat the sticker?
I still haven't figured out why they are on there in the first place--isn't it enough to put labels on the cases of tomatoes or apples, or whatever? I mean, they have to PAY somebody to put that stupid sticker of EVERY SINGLE PIECE of fruit in EVERY SINGLE CASE. Who pays? WE DO! Hello...?
But WHY would a well-spoken and obviously educated parent NOT REMOVE the thing as part of the washing process, BEFORE giving it to her child? Does this imply that she DOESN'T wash the fruit???
Next thing you know, the tiny label will come with a warning: "Sticker is not a toy. Please keep out of reach of children."
Right...
Just shoot me!
omg..i ALWAYS wash my fruit and veggies..ewww i wonder if the parent knows about the sominella outbreaks? you never know who has handled things like that ..it would be like handing a ticking time bomb to a child..and NOT taking the sticker off?...but from what i know(and i could be wrong often am lol), the stickers have numbers on them for the cashier so he/she knows what kind of fruit or veggie your buying so they can input it into the cash register..
ReplyDeletePersonally i hate those little buggers they can be a pain to remove!..and i really like your comment about what the warning could be lol..funny i thought fruit was "GOOD" for you! lol..it obviously wasn't for that poor child... OH and Ronni????
"""BANG!"""
Hehehehehehe.......
Urk. Oogh. Ow.
ReplyDeleteROFLMAO! Woman you are a refreshing ray of light...your comentary brightens my day, and your sense of humor seems to match mine!..If you were a man i'd marry ya!lol..
ReplyDeleteBut seriously i have really enjoyed your site..thanks you.
I pride myself on being a sure cure for insomnia.
ReplyDeleteThere's almost two years of stuff, some of it more interesting than other.
Seriously, I'm glad you like it.
well it hasn't cured MY insomnia..lol..i find myself staying up to see your comments! lol...
ReplyDeleteoh well........lol
It hasn't cured mine, either. Though that Martini is dong its best...
ReplyDeleteDucking here. I very seldom wash my apples. I shine them up on a tea-towel, though...?
ReplyDeleteWe also have tiny little stickers on our apples, the size of a fingernail (don't see the point). Not all apples, just the Pink Ladies.
And on an affectionate note: You already know how much I love visiting RR, don't you?
To be honest, not ALL of our fruit and veggies have them, but quite a lot do. I bought pears the other day, and they had them. Apples, some kinds. Toamtoes. They put them on there so that the cashier can tell if you're trying to pass expensive ones off as cheap.
ReplyDeleteMgt, maybe your fruits and veggies are not covered with poison like ours are. They ship things so far that they spray them with oil to keep them from going stale (they are always greasy), and the residue from the pesticides and growth agents and such doesn't bear thinking about.
Mgt, anywhere from 50 to 200 people stop by here every day, but not many leave me feedback. I do appreciate you, too!
ReplyDeleteYou may be right, Ronni. Most of our apples are grown in the UK. Any other fruit we eat in our house gets peeled, first. e.g. bananas, oranges, kiwis, pineapple.
ReplyDeleteI will still think about washing them in future.
We eat a lot of things here that don't get peeled. Tomatoes, apples, pears, plums, peaches, nectarines, grapes, strawberries, cherries...
ReplyDeleteOf course, only the larger fruit has the stickers. LOL!
I sure wouldn't want the job of putting stickers on grapes.
Oh gosh! Alright! I'll wash the darn strawberries, plums and grapes, too. Sigh!
ReplyDeleteGeez, you're really strict!
Maybe they don't spray as much stuff on them there as they do here. The EU has always been stricter than the US about food safety.
ReplyDeleteLOL...stickers on grapes..too funny..
ReplyDeleteBut i do live in the US and they do put a lot of stuff on the food..Have to wash wash wash!..heck i even rinse my meats..lol..and NO i'm not OCD, or Neurotic..just knew someone who worked in the meat cutting business..lol...you really DON'T want to know about the behind the scenes..lol..i wish i didn't lol..
sometimes being ignorant is bliss.
until it gets you in trouble..lol
and having been to the UK, and been to their wonderful markets i can say that the food there seems to just be so much nicer..of course though..when i was there in 2000, there wasn't a piece of beef in sight!... but there was one product there i really liked MGT, it was fake frozen chicken chunks ..i think the name was korn..something like that. Do you know of it? I wish i could find it here in the states..that and the chicken caserole mix ..mmmmmmmmmmm
Terri, goodwoods.com is a good site for mail-order English goodies. World Market carries a lot, too.
ReplyDeleteTerri, I think you spell it "Quorn", but, don't quote me, please.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has eaten it at a friend's house. I have seen it but haven't tried it. I think it is a soya product.
I believe a lot of our food stuffs are imported, too. We are a very small island with many mouths to feed. It will be worse after the floods.
MGT, your probably right about spelling..after all it was 7 years ago lol..alls i know is it TASTED like chicken! lol..and it was really good...never found anything in the states to compare wtih it..try it you'll like it! lol
ReplyDeleteRonnir, ty i will check it out!
