Costuming and Correctness
In a melodrama called "The Good, the Bad and the Broccoli," one character was an "Irish/Indian half-breed," called Tom O'Hawk. That's what he was called in the script, and this is how he was to be costumed, also per the script. This was in 1983, and nobody thought anything of it. Except for the actor's mother, who wanted me to clean the shower that this young man used.
We painted half his body with Texas Red Earth, a makeup that came in powder form and had to be mixed with water and sponged on. His costume was Irish on one side and Indian on the other. Pants, vest, hat--divided right down the middle
Melodramas are like that.
