"Anything Goes" Went!

On Sunday, I saw the last performance of the Palace Theater's production of "Anything Goes."

I have to say, it's the best musical I've seen there in several years. I haven't seen all the musicals they have done, but I've seen quite a few, and this one was head and shoulders above the rest.

In a word: it ROCKED!

I heard only one sour note among all the songs. For the most part, it was the best singing I've heard at The Palace in a long time. Good tight harmonies, and soaring solos.

The band was excellent, even if invisible from where I sat in the balcony. The dances were well-choreographed, and somewhat more ambitious than some I've seen in the past. I recognized some faces from the summer classes, so I have to say, those workshops paid off. Kudos to all.

The set was, hands down, the best I've ever seen at The Palace, for any production. It was compact, and did not overwhelm or crowd the actors as other sets have done. The rolling platform was very good, and the multi-level decks worked well.

As I work for the costumer, I'm not exactly an objective judge of the costumes, and was disappointed to see that some things that Ramona and I had spent hours working on were not used. Ramona is, of course, far too nice to say anything, but I'm not. If, for any reason, a costume does not work, we can either make it work, or come up with something else that will. Replacing costumes with clothing of the actor's or director's choice is not a good option when Ramona's name is in the program as "Costume Designer." Y'all hired Ramona because she is very good at what she does; so let her do it already!

The Palace, Mary Ellen and Cliff should all be very proud of this one; not to mention the cast and crew.

  1. Thanks Ronni! My daughter was in the chorus. I was so proud of her! A long drive for the show, but worth it. How about the lead, Billy - wasn't he wonderful? And the English fellow -- she had such a crush on him. I was surprised to learn that the woman who played Reno is not a professional singer.

Which costumes were not used? I know my daughter loved all of hers. She mentioned they replaced Reno's red dress a few times - I think the original one was worn by her understudy - but I thought the one she ended up with came from Ramona?

Anyway, thanks for the review. I wish more people had gotten a chance to see this show.

  2. I have worked with David and Phil at Sam Bass, They are both genuinely nice guys. Yes, the red dress. The one she wore was just worn in two different scenes. Her little blue sailor-suit with the red top did not come from us, and I saw a couple of dresses in the chorus that I had never seen before, and the outfit Barb J. wore for the wedding was absolutely contemporary. There was one lady in the chorus wearing a black top and white slacks that looked as though she had stepped onstage in her street clothes.

I'm just glad I got the chance to see it! I was tied up with "Arsenic" until the night before!

  3. Ron,

Gotta say I agree, I had a great time myself and the musicals there have been getting better and better. However, I beg to differ on the set. I am biased, but might I point out the set for You Can't Take It With You?

    Check it out at http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4001/1898/1600/Balcony%20Curtain%20call.jpg

Look at those freekin' tall walls!!! At strike it was noted that erm... there's a reason we use flats in the theatre. Which brings me to acknowledge the Habitat For Humanity for building the sets out there -- and they build 'em like they build a house -- and that makes strike interesting.

  4. Fire Berry, I did not see "You Can't Take It With You." I know I would have enjoyed it, but I was involved with something at Sam Bass at that time. Was "The Women" going on then? That one ate me alive.

Your set does look magnificent, and I heard nothing but good things about the show.
