So, when you're a preacher and a mom, which is more important?
I work part-time for a costume rental place. The person who owns it mostly designs for area plays and musicals, but also rents on an individual basis.
Today, a family came it to get a choir costume for an end-of-year program. Mama was on the phone. The kid was supposed to get something that looked 1920's. He decided on a barbershop singer's outfit, with striped jacket, boater hat, bow tie and white slacks. Mama was on the phone this whole time, which was something like 15 or 20 minutes. From hearing her end of the conversation, it became apparent that she is one of the leading lights at her church. She's trying to organize attendance at a conference.
Her son came out of the costume area to ask her if he should rent the pants, or if he should just wear his black dress pants with the red-and-white jacket and red tie. His mom was very short and sharp with him. "I don't care," she said. "Get whatever you want," she said. The shop owner cut in then to explain that the student was concerned with the finances of the rental, and wondered if he should wear his own pants to save some money. "I don't care," says Mama, again. "Just get what you need so we can get this over and done with."
Her son was on crutches and had only one leg. He was polite, well-spoken, and articulate. He seemed to be a son of whom any mother should be proud. I hope she can tear herself away from Doing the Lord's Work long enough to attend the concert.
That's the thing about landlines, Ronni.
ReplyDeleteYou could just have pulled the plug! A swift kick in the head would have been in order, there.
How did you hold yourself back?!
Poor wee soul!
I held myself back because there was nothing I could have done that would have improved the situation for the kid. Anything would have made the situation worse.
ReplyDeleteSeemed our spiritual friend was quite preoccupied, yes? Let's hope she isn't this way always. Hopefully, she hasn't missed the point of the Lord's most important commandment -- "love one another" and this event in her life was an anomoly.
ReplyDeleteI'll forgive her. Whaddya say? ;-)
Poor kid. I hope his Mom figures out what's really important in life before her son gives up on her.
ReplyDeleteThat's so sad. Poor guy, I'm sure he wanted her to be at least a little interested!
