My Favourite Garment
About 30 years ago, I noticed that the labels on clothing were very pretty and well-made scraps of fabric. I started saving them, and stalking my friends' old clothing, looking for good ones.
I found an old black velvet vest with a taffeta back and sewed a row of these little labels across the bottom edge. I finally put the last ones at the shoulders two days ago. Now I need to edge the armholes with bias tape, as that taffeta has shattered. The only things holding the front of the vest on, at this point, are the labels. Some of them have shattered over the years, and have newer ones over the top. The one that says "Grace," in the middle, is off a ball cap. The rest are actual garment labels from everything from men's suits to kids' pajamas.
If I ever manage to get them all together, I probably have enough to do another two or three vests.
If you click on the picture, and then click on the little button that pops up in the lower right corner, you can get it big enough to read the labels.

Back in the day, they wouldn't let you. It would be considered "cross-dressing," and banned.
ReplyDeleteThat's when Chandra and Luis were in high school.
However, if you fond out it's allowed, I have a lovely black brocade tailcoat you are welcome to borrow. I wore it in Auntie Mame. Ask Fire Berry. She liked it! LOL!
hey that's pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool! Reminds me of the time my grandma bought her first "designer" clothes. She said she wanted to wear it inside out just so the label would show!
